GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 330313
Default font size is not used in new users
Last modified: 2010-08-18 20:12:55 UTC
Upstreaming from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=170155 See that bug for full details (it morphed slightly) Description of problem: In "epiphany-1.9.6-1", sans serif fonts are used right from the start. However, most fonts are too small. Only after going to "Preferences" -> "Fonts & Style" -> "Detailed Font Settings..." the size of the concerned fonts jumps instantaneously to the right values. This is apparently due to the same bug that caused the use of serif instead of sans serif fonts. See 2 attached screenshots for the "before/after" effect.

The default settings are still wrong in current version 2.15.1. After opening "Preferences" -> "Fonts & Style" -> "Detailed Font Settings..." for the first time, all values equal "1" as the attached screensht shows. Setting the values to "11", "10" and "7" allows to recover rendering in normal font sizes.

Issue still present in current development version 2.15.4 as the screenshots in comment #3 and comment# demonstrate.
Is this still present? This was also reported on Ubuntu: https://bugs.launchpad.net/products/epiphany-browser/+bug/72109
I'm at 2.17.3 and the issue still is there. default font size settings in "Fedora Core Development" after logging into a new account are Minimum size: 7 Fixed width: 12 Variable width: 12 but instead of 12, the displayed size is rather 10. When, e.g., I change a value of 12 in the panel to 11 and back to 12, the font size immediately jumps to the correct greater value.
I don't understand your e.g.
(In reply to comment #8) > I don't understand your e.g. e.g. : for instance (exempli gratia)
I mean that I didn't understand your exempli gratia :).
Created attachment 79099 [details] Sample screenshot after logging into new user account This is from the current "Fedora Core" development tree. A new user account is created, and "epiphany" [2.17.4] displays a sample web page according to the screenshot. No user settings have been altered.
Created attachment 79100 [details] Default detailed font settings in FC development It is obvious from the screenshot that the default font sizes do not match the ones which are actually used [previous screenshot]. Only after modifying at least one value [or changing it and setting it back to the old value again], "epiphany" seems to actually use these settings. In the browser window, the font sizes suddenly jump to the values given in the settings window [next screenshot].
Created attachment 79101 [details] Sample screenshot after the default font settings got read in Ok, now everything is right again, The detailed font sizes used for rendering the web page actually are 7/12/12 now. This is too big for me and easily changed, but at least "wysiwyg".
Ah gotcha. :) Thanks for your efforts!. We'll check this.
There will be no more 2.18.x releases; moving bugs off of that target milestone.
Bug is still present in epiphany 2.22.2.
Reality check.
I don't think this is present anymore in Epiphany 2.26.3. (Fedora 11)
Created attachment 139920 [details] Screenshot of epiphany 2.26.3 For me, the issue persists: the attached screenshot shows a page rendered using initial font sizes (12/11) on the left; the same page after setting detailed font sizes to (11/10) on the right. Note that the characters which form the header lines have become larger. When resetting sizes back to (12/11), then the discrepancy gets even more striking.

This was filed for Gecko. Now that Webkit is used instead, this bug should be expired, and any similar behavior should have separate bug(s).
I suppose that the 2.26.x series has not been abandoned yet, and given the substantial deficiencies of epiphany-webkit, the Gecko based variant is far from obsolete.
(In reply to comment #22) > I suppose that the 2.26.x series has not been abandoned yet, and given the > substantial deficiencies of epiphany-webkit, the Gecko based variant is far > from obsolete. There is in fact nobody maintaining the 2.26.x series.
Marking OBSOLETE.
