Sent folder view for nntp messages (14.77 KB, image/png)

Description David Planella 2006-02-06 22:15:35 UTC
Please describe the problem:
After sending a message from an nntp account via SMPT, the message is stored in
the 'Sent' folder with an empty 'To:' field, that is, the field contains an
empty string.

If the full message header is examined, it can be seen that it does not contain
any 'To:' or 'Post-To:' header, but an 'X-Evolution-PostTo:' header. However,
Evolution seems to ignore the contents of the 'X-Evolution-PostTo:' header when
showing the 'To:' field for the particular message in the 'Sent' folder.

Steps to reproduce:
1. On a correctly set up nntp account, send a message to the list via
right-click (on a message on the list) + 'Reply To Sender:' or through the
menues -> Message > Mailing List > Post Message To The List.

Actual results:
Result: the message is sent and stored in the 'Sent' folder with an empty 'To:'
field.

Expected results:
The To: field on the message list panel of the 'Sent' folder should contain the
actual address the message has been sent to. In this case, a first guess is that
it should have the contents of the 'X-Evolution-PostTo:' header.

Does this happen every time?
This happens every time.

Other information:
Here's the header of a message sent to the evolution list from an nntp account
(note that the real e-mail address has been masked):

Hmm, I'm by no means an NNTP expert, but the Post-To target sure should be available, IMHO.
Comment 2 Sankar P 2006-02-07 05:25:51 UTC
Bernart: Have a look at 274117

Did you use Post-To or New-Mail? For NNTp, you must use Post-NewMessage-To menu-option. In 2.5, it is avaialable in Message Menu.

Comment 4 David Planella 2006-02-08 22:08:08 UTC
Sankar P:

I had a look at #274117, and although closely related, it is not exactly the same issue. I tried several things, but what I was describing on the initial post was what happened when using the Post-To field to specify the "folder to post to" (quoting the Evolution tooltip) when composing a new message. So again:

1. I right-clicked on the message I wanted to reply to (in an nntp folder)
2. I chose 'Reply To Sender' fron the context menu.
3. The window for composing a new message appeared. On that window, only the 'Post To' (and not the 'To') field was visible, and its contents were "gmane.comp.gnome.evolution.general" -which was the list I wanted to send my message to.
4. The message was sent correctly to the list and according to my SMTP server settings.
5. The message appeared on my 'Sent' folder. Only thing was, the 'To' field was empty.
6. After looking at the message headers, there was no 'To:' or 'Post-To:' header, only 'X-Evolution-PostTo:', which contained "nntp://@news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.evolution.general", as you can see on my first report.

BTW, and regardless this little annoyance of the empty "To" field, this is the only way I've managed to post messages to a list. If I do a Message>Mailing List>Post Message To list, what I get on the "message composer" window is only a visible "To" field containing "evolution-list@gnome.org" -no visible "Post To" this time. After hitting the 'Send' button, sending the message fails with the following error message (see attachment):
Error while performing operation.

RCPT TO <evolution-list@gnome.org> failed: <evolution-list@gnome.org>... Relaying denied
Furthermore, this last method (if it had worked) would only allow creating new posts and *not* replying to other posts on the list.

Sent folder view for nntp messages

This is how nntp messages appear in the Sent folder after being successfully posted to a newsgroup. Notice the empty To: field.
Comment 7 David Planella 2006-04-30 07:24:51 UTC
I can reproduce this bug in Evolution 2.6.1. Again:

1) Right-click on a message from a newsgroup account, select "Reply To All", compose the message and send it.

2) Message is successfully posted to the newsgroup

3) Message is copied to the Sent folder and it is shown with an empty "To:" field. Looking at the message source, there is no To: or Post-To: header, only an X-Evolution-PostTo: one. Please see the attachment on my previous post for a screenshot of what is shown in the Sent folder.

The message headers look the same as the ones posted on my first report (except for their content, most notably X-Mailer: is now Evolution 2.6.1)

Any work being done on that? Could at least someone confirm it?

Thanks.
Comment 8 David Planella 2006-11-16 17:09:02 UTC
*poke* Any updates on this bug?

I can still reproduce it in Evolution 2.8.1.
Comment 9 André Klapper 2021-05-19 11:56:17 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
 https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new bug report ticket at
 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
