Description Sebastien Bacher 2006-02-02 14:49:11 UTC
This bug has been opened on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ekiga/+bug/30263

"The name on the applications menu should be Ekiga VoIP or something similar so it is easier to find out what this program is doing.
...

There are some relevant HIG guidelines:
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/desktop-integration.html

I'd recommend avoiding the use of technical terms like SIP, VOIP/Voice over IP, H.323 etc if possible. However, VOIP is being used as a marketing buzzword, and some people might identify with this.

So maybe 'Ekiga VOIP Internet Phone' and a tooltip like:

'Make phone calls to friends and family over the Internet'"
Comment 1 Snark 2006-02-02 19:44:51 UTC
Hmmm... I agree. Would "Ekiga VOIP Internet (video)phone" fit ?
Comment 2 Phil Bull 2006-02-03 09:38:35 UTC
I think the danger is making the name too long. If we use 'video phone', and maybe drop 'VOIP'? Or does 'video phone' imply the 'Internet' part?

 * Ekiga Internet Video-Phone
 * Ekiga VOIP Video-Phone
 * Ekiga Video Phone
Comment 3 Damien Sandras 2006-02-03 10:52:43 UTC
Ekiga softphone?

I don't like stressing on VoIP or Video because people will do bad assumptions about what it is again.
Comment 4 Snark 2006-02-03 17:15:14 UTC
"Ekiga Audio-video phone" ? :-/

We can't say too much, but if we say too little people will be mislead :-/
Comment 5 rubinstein 2006-02-07 15:27:46 UTC
I agree that finding the right name is not that simple.

I think we should call it :-) Ekiga Internet Phone or Ekiga Internet Telephone.

Comment 6 Snark 2006-02-08 08:45:01 UTC
"Ekiga Media Communications" ?
Comment 7 Damien Sandras 2006-02-12 19:13:05 UTC
"Ekiga Softphone".

FIXED.

For now, Ekiga is a softphone. Even if it gets presence later, it will still be a softphone like XTEN for example. String freeze is very near, so I changed now.
Comment 8 Corey Burger 2006-02-15 21:04:05 UTC
Several of us where chatting on #ubuntu-devel and we came across an issue with translating "softphone" that didn't exist with "internet telephone". Yes, I understand that Ekiga works without internet, via a PBX, but users that are going to need it for a non-internet purpose are going to know that, IMHO.
Comment 9 Damien Sandras 2006-02-15 21:38:41 UTC
Indeed, I do not know how to translate that, but look:
