GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 329020
Genius MousePen tablet is very slow on GIMP 2.3.6
Last modified: 2008-01-15 14:05:29 UTC
Please describe the problem: GIMP 2.3.6 on Windows XP SP2 & GTK 2.8.9 works with Genius MousePen tablet very slowly. The functionality seems to be OK (generic pen positioning and even pressure sensitivity) but the cursor lags behind the real movement for a few seconds. Rolling back to GIMP 2.2.10 (with the same GTK library) solves the problem. Steps to reproduce: 1. Activate Paint Brush 2. Use pen tablet and draw some figure relatively fast (e.g. I draw my signature) Actual results: The figure is drawn but it takes 1-2 secs after I finish the real pen movement before the cursor on the screen completes the movement. Expected results: Cursor should move "in sync" with real pen movement Does this happen every time? Yes (on GIMP 2.3.5 & 2.3.6) On GIMP 2.2.10 the movement is much faster and the lag is almost invisible. Other information:
Are you certainly using the same configuration? Have you compared your gimprc files and the tool and brush settings?
(In reply to comment #1) Yes - the problem occurs after fresh install of GIMP package from http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net. I've tried v2.3.5, 2.3.6 and 2.2.10 - first two (2.3) exibit problems, last one (2.2) works fine. I've checked gimprc files - they are identical. Tool and brush settings are also the same...
A couple of questions: 1) Does the speed depend on which tool or brush you use, or is it similar for all paint tools? 2) If you use the Fuzzy Select (Lasso) tool, does it draw quickly or is this slow as well?
All drawing tools are slow - I've checked Brush, Pen and Pencil and didn't see any difference in speed. The Fuzzy Select is not slow at all and works like a charm...
Any progress in this issue? I just bought a Genius MousePen and I have the exaclty same issue. But on my gentoo, the GIMP works perfectly. If there is anybody that can help me with this, I can do some coding or try to figure out what is the real problem. Just need someone to guide me. I really hope to help fixing this problem. I have lots of artists friends that doesn't even want to install gimp because they know that the gimp wont work with their cheap tablets. Thanks.
Use the source, use a profiler, help yourself. Seriously, it is pointless to wait for someone to improve this. The only chance that it will ever improve is that someone with such a tablet scratches an itch and improves it. Closing the bug report as it refers to an outdated development version and doesn't contain any information that could help to fix the problem.
Thanks for nothing. Please, at least put this bug as status CLOSED and WONTFIX. This is why Krita is growing so fast and GIMP not.
If you open a bug report against a current release and include enough information to make it useful, why should it be closed? It might make more sense though to investigate a little before filing a bug report. The problem is most likely located in the tablet device driver. A profiler (such as for example sysprof) should give you the information you need.
