GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 327949
Icons on desktop need "lock here" option
Last modified: 2006-03-22 20:52:30 UTC
Hi, I'm a heavy user of the desktop icons, since I use the desktop as my home dir and access all my important folders through it. Plus, whenever I mount a device I want its icon to appear on the desktop. An everything I save from the Internet goes strauight to my desktop. My important folders (music, images etc) are located on the top right, while mounted devices are on the bottom right. I like it that way. But using "reorder by name" changes their placement and makes a mess. I think nautilus NEEDS to implement a "lock here" option in the context menu, for specyfying that you WANT a specific icon to remain in a specific place on the screen. If you use "reorder by name" then, all other icons would be placed considering all free spaces. You could even make it so that you can move a locked icon manually, but not movable through "reorder by name". I don't know if that would be such a great idea, though, I just came up with it. It's up to you.
I dont think only a "lock here" option would suffice. Many people on the nautilus list are also asking for icons alignement. "Right alignement" for those comming from the mac world. My suggestion here would be to have a icon alignement option as of "Left", "Right", "Top" and "Bottom". Next is an icon region placement. This means that the user should be able to define a region where icon should be placed, to not be overlapped by Third party tools or to not hide some very nice desktop images. These region should be define as rectangle. And lastly, for the extrem case. A lock here option to have an icon always on the same spot whatever happen on the desktop. Even out of region and out of alignement. This should be more complet for a icon beaviors on desktop.
