GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 326985
Update to the Accessibility Guide
Last modified: 2006-08-18 10:47:02 UTC
Documentation Section: The patch is for the Mouse and Keyboard section. Currently it is horribly out of date. This patch fixes some of the larger issues. There are still many I want to fix. Applies to dtconfig.xml. More info in a second Correct version: Other information:
Created attachment 57362 [details] [review] Fix some of the basic stuff Mostly the patch changes instances of Applications->Desktop Preferences to System->Preferences. It also removes most of the bit about choosing cursor sizes and instead mentions cursor themes (although not very well at the moment). The section on keyboard a11y changes the menus to point to the current location of the options dalog. Since all these options are now instant apply, references to logging out and in again have been removed, where applicable. There are now references in the notes to state that confirmation dialogs will appear before turning on a11y function from the keyboard.
Created attachment 57414 [details] [review] Update This updates this section some more, replacing the previous patch. Some highlights: Removed the two tables for mousekeys and replaced by one since they basically said the same thing. Added a little more about how mouse button clicking works using mousekeys. Theres also a missing image that I'll attach in a minute.

Created attachment 57418 [details] [review] Explained what moving the sliders do when configuring the mouse Explained what moving the sliders do when configuring the mouse for double-click and mouse pointer sensitivity.
Will change patch to add the words "increment" and "decrement" for the adjustment of mouse sensitivity and double-click response.
Created attachment 58259 [details] [review] Once more Another update to the Keyboard & Mouse section to fix a couple of problems with the last patch. This one removes the Ubuntuism of System and changes it to Desktop. It also changes all occurrences of "Cursor" to "Pointer" for Mouse related stuff and adds a note about GNOME not including mouse themes by default (and points to the user guide for adding more themes). This isn't ideal, but until GNOME ships with pointer themes or someone comes up with better wording, it'll have to do ;)
Created attachment 58276 [details] [review] Update to the Key Nav section A much smaller patch for this section. Not much here, a few comments clarified. A few obsolete key combos removed. A fairly large change is the removal of the section "Navigating the File Manager" as it refers soley to the navigational mode and doesn't mention anything about Spatial mode.
Hmm, navigational mode is still available as an option, isn't it? Not sure we should remove that stuff entirely from the docs...
This patch might make Bug 138289 obsolete.
What is the status of this patch? Can it be committed or do some changes need to be made related to comment 8?
I've committed the first patch (for the Mouse and Keyboard section) since there didn't seem to be any objections. I'll rework the "Navigating the File Manager" section to include both spatial and navigational mode.
Created attachment 59695 [details] [review] Reinclude the File Manager Section Adds back in the File manager section to the KeyNav section. Splits it into 2 subsections - "To Navigate in Spatial Mode" and "To Navigate in Navigational Mode".
Created attachment 59705 [details] [review] Update to the theme section This updates the themes section. It replaces <citetitle>s with links to the relevant documents and brings menu options up to date etc. It does remove 2 subsections - "To Customize the File Manager Font" and "To Customize the Text Editor Font" and replaces them with a new section "To Customize Application Fonts" that provides links to manuals where the information is supplied. The apps listed are "Help Browser" - with no link at the moment, "Text Editor" - with a link to the gedit manual, "Terminal" - link to gnome-terminal manual and "Web Browser" - link to epiphany manual.
Created attachment 59709 [details] [review] Update the ATS section Very small patch for this section. Adds links to the GOK and gnopernicus manuals at the relevant places. Updates the screensaver to reflect the added simplicity from gnome-screensaver (i.e. remove almost all the instructions and replace with Deselect the "Activate the screensaver when idle" checkbox.)
Comments on #12: For the UG link, id "nautilus-presentation" is the page that explains spatial and browser mode. Also, the UG uses the term "browser mode", not "Navigational mode". Which one is correct? The spatial mode shortcuts don't mention Home and End. Should all shortcuts be mentioned? THere are a few others for open parent. I'm not sure about the distinction anyway. All the stuff in "3.7.1. To Navigate in Spatial Mode" also applies to a folder in a browser window. A better structure might be common shortcuts first, then navigational-specific ones. 3.7.1. To Navigate a Folder 3.7.2 To Navigate Browser Window components ...etc Question: how do I use the keyboard to select non-contiguous items, the way I would with CTRL-mouse click? What is the keyboard shortcut to select the currently focused icon? There ought to be one. (If not, file bug :) Should there be a paragraph that explains the difference between 'selected' and 'focussed'? Or is this elsewhere in the a11y guide?

#16: s/seperate/separate/, but otherwise looks great. #13: See Bug 332879. Links to the user guide: "prefs-theme" (in the table, and the term "Theme Preferences dialog" in "4.2.2. To Choose a Theme". "nautilus-backgrounds-and-emblems", in the table. I've previously linked to it like this: <link linkend="nautilus-backgrounds-and-emblems"><guilabel>Backgrounds and Emblems</guilabel> dialog</link> in the <application>Nautilus</application> file manager. "prefs-desktopbackground" "prefs-font" (just updated that one in CVS) #14: Looks fine. I can't check the links as I don't have those apps installed.
Hi, I've committed the patches from comments #16 and #14. For #13, I've changed the theme names as suggested by bug #332879. I haven't added any more links other that what was in the patch originally. I had a look at where (I think) you wanted to add links. To me, they don't really need links and adding them breaks up the text a bit.
I thought it would be a good idea to link to help on the tools we mention, such as Theme prefs, or the backgrounds dialog in Nautilus, because that explains how to get to them and how to use them. I thought inline links, rather than an explicit "For more on this, see ..." type link that yes, does break the text up. But it's your call. :)
