GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 326171
Ctr+X and Ctr+V over folders doesn't work.
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:32:34 UTC
Please describe the problem: If I use Ctr+X (or right click->cut) or copy a file (or more), and I select a folder stored in the same folder of the original file, and press Ctr+V it paste it on the same folder where it is stored. Steps to reproduce: 1. Select a file that has folders in the same folder where it is stored. 2. Copy or cut that file. 3. Select one of the folders in the same folder where that file is stored. 4. Press Ctr+V shortcut. Actual results: - If I copied the original file, then the file is duplicated on the same location. - If I cutted the file, nothing happens (the file is pasted in the same folder that it was). Expected results: The file should be stored on the selected folder Does this happen every time? Yes Other information:
When I say select, I don't mean open it. I mean only pointing it with one click or using the keyboard cursor.
Thanks for your bug report! Confirming, CCing usability team. This sounds like one of the cases where we have to decide whether we operate on the enclosing folder or on the selected folder. Maybe we should at least provide a ctrl-shift-v shortcut for pasting into the selected folder?
If I perform a Copy (either with Ctrl+V or with the popup menu), I click on a folder, and I press Ctrl-V, I see no other intention than trying to paste it on that folder. So I see the "user must click on it unintentionally" argument here, what I think, is that some kind of feedback sould be given, so the user notices the file has been pasted on that folder, that way fix the confusion. With the actual behaviour there is that feedback, but it is really frustrating doing Ctrl-V on that way again and again, and then, remember that I should open the folder again. I'm sure that there are people out there with the same problem.
Bug 339683 also requests to be able to add a bookmark for a selected subfolder.
To make things clear, I'd add a new menu item and make the labels explicit. Say there is a foo/bar/ folder, you are viewing foo/, and you right-click on the bar item: Paste in folder "foo" [C-v] Paste in subfolder "bar" C-v preserves its current meaning, which is to paste in the enclosing folder. We also get a specific option to paste in subfolders. This would also solve the problem that if you have a list view which scrolls (i.e. it has no blank area at the end of the list of files), then you cannot paste into the viewed folder from the right-click menu.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
