Description Albert Vilella 2005-12-22 23:06:53 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #321288 +++

I would like to suggest a new feature for GNOME related to podcasting
and iPod-like devices:

It would be great to see something related to the "Import" feature for
digital photography devices but that would do a "Sync" of Monopod
(read: any other podcast application) content when an iPod-like device
is plugged. Something along the lines of (what I have only heard
about) auto-sync in iTunes. For example:

John has Monopod always running in his computer, which downloads the
latest podcasts for his adored feeds.

John realizes he has to leave in 30 minutes, so plugs his inexpensive mp3 player
device in the computer to sync the content:

A menu (similar to the "Import" menu for photos) appears asking for
confirmation to "Sync" the content of Monopod in the device.

The content of Monopod is synced in the device. As the device might
need extra space to allocate the new podcasts, the oldest entries in the Monopod list would be erased in the device, leaving enough space for the newest to be
synced.

A confirmation appears when the sync is completed and the device can
be unplugged.

The limited-space stuff in the inexpensiv mp3-player is much like what is hipped in ipodderx:

Keep your hard drive from filling up with old podcasts with SmartSpace. Simply set the amount of space you'd like to use, and iPodderX automatically deletes old files. And if a file gets deleted that you want to keep, that's OK -- iPodderX makes it a snap to re-download old files.

This is probably more suited for Rhythmbox.

I would love to see Rhythmbox "Sync" my podcasts :)

I am not very familiar with the Rhythmbox code. Can anyone roughly point me to were to look at for trying to implement this features?

Hey Albert Vilella,

good to see that others want that feature too. I have been looking for that for a while. Any luck so far?

Unfortunately, I have no clue about the rhythmbox code. I know that there is a plug-in interface for c and python and that the python interface is easier to handle (the website says). But I dont know python :-( and I dont know whether you would be able to do that with a plug-in.

Seems that the rhythmbox programmers arent interested in that much. When I find the time, I will have a look at that myself. But from my limited position it doesnt seem very promising.

Can anyone help?

IMHO, it would be better for Rhythmbox to provide a synchronise plugin, to synchronise a playlist with a specified directory. This would cover any supported device, as well as support NFS and any other mounted/virtual filesystem.

Possibly a duplicate of bug #310774, although I'm unsure whether the patches on that bug refer to an iPod-specific sync or whether it'd work generically from playlist->folder.

The media player sync code I just merged in to master includes podcast sync capabilities.
