GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 320555
Improve handling of vertical panels
Last modified: 2007-02-22 08:53:17 UTC
Can the widget be rotated like the menu bar and clock applets in the newest GNOME release?
Right now, it cannot, and i must admit i don't know how to do it properly..
I suspect this would involve writing a new GtkEntry widget. People with vertical panels may benefit more from using a panel drawer to store this widget in.
Or maybe we should have a tray-icon mode for deskbar? The current focus-shortcut could pop up the entry...
Too much complication, not widely used case, i suggest we close this as WONTFIX. Using any other mean than an entry, would not allow to directly paste things in the entry, and is not a good thing. Writing a vertical entry widget makes no sense, so.. If really needed, please reopen, we'll flag as very low priority.

I'd like to see this bug fixed in some way. Vertical panel is a real improvement for wide screens, and it would be nive to have all applets be able to deal with vertical panels. About the paste thing, why would not it be possible to paste over the icon in which case the entry would pop-up ?
It's not a matter of typing vertical text. Currently if the panel is vertical, the search box appears to the side, as it should. The problem is that when the Deskbar layout is set to "entry panel", the search box does not appear, and the user is left wondering what has happened. Instead, it should autmatically switch to button panel when the panel is vertical, and remember the user's preference when moved to a horizontal panel.
