Description Jose M. daLuz 2005-10-19 15:42:03 UTC
Distribution/Version: Gentoo 2005.1 2.6.13-ck8 AMD64

Typing contact names or email addresses doesn't allow me to send emails to
Evolution contacts.

Normally, I don't use Evolution, so I exported my Thunderbird addressbooks as
.ldif and imported into Evolution. I now have several hundred contacts with
about 55-60% having email addresses.

I did activate "Email Addresses" in deskbar preferences and the deskbar startup
output includes "Initializing Address Book" but no other messages regarding that
handler. Typing in names or partial emails of contacts does not bring up
anything relating to contact. The old "Email Addresses" handler offers to send
emails to anything that looks like an address even if it's not in my address
book, so I turned that handler off and now get nothing related to contacts/emails.

Evolution-data-server is definitely running (it shows up in the process list,
plus I entered a test task in Evolution and it shows up if I click on my clock
applet).

Could you please check - if you, from Evolution's main window, go Edit ->
Preferences, and then Auto-Completion, is your address book (probably called
something like Personal) ticked?

That's it - after ticking that box and restarting deskbar-applet, the address
lookup works. Thanks!

We can't close this one !

Having to enable a feature in evolution to make deskbar work isn't an acceptable
solution.

I suggest instead we put this in some FAQ or info message for evol handler, or
something that the user can see to really enable evo handler.

OK, it looks like we really need a general UI for "broken" handlers to say why
they aren't working - and give instructions on how to fix. For example,
something to the effect of "turn on auto-complete in Evolution", or "you will
need a Google API key". I say discussion should be on the mailing list, not
that I have any great ideas at the moment. :)

Also, ideally, deskbar-applet shouldn't need a re-start, but that's a separate
bug...

Preferences UI should now show a little info message if your evolution address
books do not have auto-complete on.
