GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 318725
Long filenames stretch filename column in Nautilus' list view
Last modified: 2013-10-07 22:41:06 UTC
And when you open a folder with shorter filenames, you end up with a load of wasted space. We have 2 obvious options: 1. Shrink filename column when opening a new folder (try changing to icon view then back to list view and you'll see it condenses all columns automatically). 2. Have the width fixed and use "..."-style truncation. The number of times I have opened a folder with long filenames then moved elsewhere and had all the other columns missing is huge! Does my head in. :P Other information: Cheers!
My vote is for option no 2.
I have been notfied that i filled in a probably duplicate of this bugreport here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419721
Bug numbers #418307 and #419343 also seem to be duplicates, or very closely related: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=418307 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419343 To sum these up: * two people want Nautilus to automatically adjust the size of the Name column downward to the size of the longest name and no more. * Another wants Nautilus to do no resizing at all, but the remember the size of the columns and restore it when the nautilus window is reopened (I assume this person is using Nautilus in "browser" mode -- claiming that Nautilus instead does what the first two people are asking for. * A fourth has noticed a change in nautilus, causing the Name column to be resized to a whatever small size is necessary in order to fit all the columns in the window without the need for horizontal scrolling. This person also recalls that Nautilus used to do what the first two people want. * Then there's me -- I've noticed the last change too. I use Nautilus in spacial mode, and before the change, every folder/window would remember the size of the columns just as it did the size and position of the window. Now nautilus resizes the name column to an insanely small size so that the other columns fit every time a folder is opened, and does not remember the column size when the window is closed and opened again. This is, well, annoying. I find the file name to be more important than how big it is. :-/ If there were columns scrolled off to the side, it's because I put them there, please leave them alone. So I'm a little frustrated to find these bugs here asking for Nautilus to resize their columns for them (though I doubt any of them would like the current, new behavior). It might be interesting if the people involved could weigh in on whether they're using Nautilus in spacial or browser mode.
There is movement on this issue as documented in the bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96239 There should be a patched Nautilus turning up in the near future for your distro according to the messages following: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/nautilus-list/2007-February/msg00048.html Could someone with rights sort out the duplication issues of these connected bugs?
Here is a semi complete list of duplicates: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/94014 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/89031 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=422563 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419343 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=410361 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=416628 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318725

We expand the filename column now and ellipsize as needed.
I could cry when I find this bug via Google. Ahhhhhhh!!!! Almost every time I open a Nautilus window I have to resize the name column. Using the silly new mini slider at the bottom of the window. A usability nightmare. And here, only circular references to a dozen of duplicate issues. And this issue is marked as RESOLVED and FIXED. NOOOOOOOOOO! It is not FIXED. It is BROKEN! I spent way to much time already on this, searching the web for hidden config options and such (->nothing). Creating an account here just to let you know.
(In reply to comment #8) > new mini slider at the bottom of the window. I'm not sure what this means. There is no slider at the bottom of a Nautilus window. Perhaps this is a different application? A screenshot would help. > Creating an account here just to let you know. Thanks for taking the time to let us know. This bug report isn't very useful because it doesn't describe the bug well. If you have time please read http://bugzilla.gnome.org/bug-HOWTO.html and file a new bug report with a more useful description here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=nautilus
