Description Sebastien Bacher 2005-09-20 21:45:57 UTC
This bug has been opened here: http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15690

"No Recent Documents are shown just after logging in to Ubuntu Breezy.
Only when a document gets added by opening a file, the complete list of recent
documents under Computer->Recent Documents becomes visible again."
Comment 1 Patrick Gasperini 2005-09-21 16:49:28 UTC
When I log in to Ubuntu Breezy (Gnome 2.12.0) the Recent Documents list
(Places-->Recent Documents) isn't visible, but the Clear Recent Documents button
is active (not greyed). This happens in spite of the fact that the
.recently-used file is correctly chmod 600, and lists all the recently used files.

The Recent Documents list becomes visible again as soon as a new file is opened
or, for example, if I change the icon set in
system-->preferences-->theme-->theme details
Comment 2 Sebastien Bacher 2005-09-22 17:26:30 UTC
this is due to the changes from the 2005-05-02 by markmc
Comment 3 Vincent Untz 2005-10-03 06:52:31 UTC
Sebastien: I can't find an easy way to reproduce. You said you could reproduce
using another wm/desktop, am I right? But does it happen with just GNOME?
Comment 4 Sebastien Bacher 2005-10-03 08:09:21 UTC
I've said it happens with GNOME. I get it using wmaker too. As said I runned it
from wmaker to make sure than no other GNOMish stuff mess with the
recently-used, from wmaker I just start the panel so the bug comes from it. From
my gnome account a gnome-session-remove gnome-panel && gnome-panel is enough to
get the issue.
Comment 5 Vincent Untz 2005-10-03 08:51:01 UTC
Weird. It doesn't always happen for me... Is there some output on the terminal?
Does it happen with all .recently-used files?
Comment 6 Sebastien Bacher 2005-10-03 10:01:17 UTC
no output and I've not noted anything special about the .recently-used
Comment 7 Nael Masood 2005-10-05 21:47:13 UTC
I get this problem too. I managed to fix it by deleting all my GNOME and
Gconf-related hidden files in my home directory (don't do this unless you're
feeling daring or bored), so my guess is that there's a setting somewhere in
GNOME that lets you hide it at each login.

I've also noticed the following---but I don't know if it may be relevant:

When you click the Clear Recent Documents button, the following msg window shows up:

----------
Clear the Recent Documents list?

If you clear the Recent Documents list, you clear the following:
- All items from the Places-->Recent Documents menu item
- All items from the recent documents list in all applications
-----------

Well, that's not true.

For example, in Ubuntu 5.10 (final release) that uses Gnome Panel 2.12.1, the
recent documents list in such other applications as OpenOffice Writer 2 is still
there, full of recently opened files, whether you click the Clear Recent
Documents button or not.

PS: i wonder why this issue is still unconfirmed
Comment 10 Patrick Gasperini 2005-12-20 18:24:44 UTC
I've noticed that Recent Documents are _always_ visible if a location is bookmarked and added to Places.

The bug doesn't seem to be active since I added /var/www to Places (Ubuntu Breezy--- Gnome Panel 2.12.1)
Comment 11 Vincent Untz 2005-12-30 10:50:27 UTC
Adding to 2.14.x milestone.
Comment 12 Vincent Untz 2005-12-30 12:17:36 UTC
Patrick: I don't know how OOo handles its list of recently files. Maybe it doesn't use the standard way ;-)

Also, I don't see why a having a bookmark would help. This is weird. Do people who see this bug have bookmarks?
Comment 13 Thorsten Peter 2006-01-04 19:10:36 UTC
Vincent: I had this problem too with a plain Ubuntu 5.10. I can confirm that the problem disappeared after creating a bookmark. I even could delete the bookmark afterwards without having the problem re-occur.

Other workarounds that worked for me (but only until the next boot), are:
- opening one of the recent documents
- touching the .recently-used file

I have never used bookmarks, and I have had always this bug in Ubuntu Breezy. Last night I read you all, created a bookmark, removed it and on logging in again everything works fine. It is a very odd solution. I can not understand how that it is related to the recent documents list.

At the time, no I didn't. I notice that making a bookmark does indeed fix it. The question, as stated by several other here, is why you would need to do that in the first place. Very odd behaviour.
Comment 17 Sebastien Bacher 2006-02-26 13:59:12 UTC
still happening
Comment 18 Sebastien Bacher 2006-03-29 10:34:29 UTC
seems to be fixed, might be to gnome-menus distro patch we use to make it use gnome-vfs for notification stuff...
Comment 19 Gianmarco Leone 2006-04-20 14:15:12 UTC
This sunny morning, with gnome 2.14 and dapper flight 6, still the same behaviour...well, i checked now, and recent documents is filled. I really can't figure out wich operation made them active again.
Comment 20 Patrick Gasperini 2006-04-23 12:47:29 UTC
Just using Ubuntu Dapper Beta (Gnome Panel 2.14.1). This bug no longer turns up on logging in (I'm pretty sure of that as I've been using the OS for some days).

Things are ok on the whole, only on a couple of occasions the Recent Documents list hid again while I was using the system. I still can't figure out why that happened. Anyway, no bug on logging in.
Comment 21 Sebastien Bacher 2006-05-28 15:50:20 UTC
Other similar bug: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/44940

"Recent Documents Show Nothing But "Clear Documents"

I'm running latest dapper on x86. Many times, I only see one menu entry in "Recent Documents": Clear Recent Documents. I'm looking for a way to reproduce this consistantly. Can anyone else find a way to consistantly reporoduce this?"
Comment 22 Patrick Gasperini 2006-06-07 17:17:19 UTC
Bug pops up again when some USB device gets mounted.

Before mounting the USB device the list is full, after mounting it the list appears empty.

But I have got to confirm my previous comment (# 20): no bug on logging in.

I'm now running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Gnome Panel 2.14.1)

I have the same problem on mounting a CD. At the moment, on logging in I haven't had the bug again.
Comment 24 Nuno Sousa 2006-09-09 10:34:21 UTC
Hi. I'm using Gentoo and I also have this problem. I'm using gnome 2.14.2 and the "Recent Documents" menu appears with only the "Clear Recent Documents" everytime I log in and plug/inplug a USB pen.

To get the documents back in the list I have to open any document, but it beats the purpose of having a "Recent Documents" place.

Any ideas if this is happening in gnome 2.16?
Comment 25 Benjamín Valero Espinosa 2006-11-03 20:11:18 UTC
It seems that this long problem has been solved in Gnome 2.16. I have been using Ubuntu Edgy for a week and I have noticed no bug. Well, one year is not so much :) I am not that brave to close it.
Comment 26 Vincent Untz 2006-11-14 23:15:36 UTC
This works in 2.16.
