If this option is disabled, gdesklets should use the root window and not the
Gnome background image for pseudo transparency

gDesklets neither uses the root window nor the GNOME background image for pseudo transparency. It reads the reference to the background pixmap from a XAtom property on the root window (_XROOTPMAP_ID). It's GNOME's or other desktop environments' task to make this XAtom point to the correct pixmap on the X server.
