It would be interesting to be able to resize multiple images in the browser
view, instead of only one. Currently the option is grayed out in the browser view.

Also, it could be a nice touch to be able to enable crossfading the pictures
shown in slideshow mode, instead of a hard switch between each image.

Are there special requirements for this to work? It is just that it doesn't seem to work for me in 2.7.2.

yes, you need the X11 XFree86 video mode extension library.
If you have a Debian like distro install the package libxxf86vm-dev
