Description James Henstridge 2005-07-18 21:04:06 UTC
Please describe the problem:
Sao Carlos, Brazil is a selectable location in gweather but forcasts don't seem
to be available.

Steps to reproduce:
1. create a weather applet on the panel
2. select the location: "Central and South America" -> "Brazil" -> "Sao Carlos"
3. look at weather report

Actual results:
"?" icon is displayed, and tooltip stays as "Updating..."

Expected results:
See weather info

Does this happen every time?
yes

Other information:
If there is no weather station for Sao Carlos, perhaps it should be removed from
the locations list?

I wonder how many other locations don't actually get weather reports?

I can reproduce this bug with gnome-applets 2.10.1-0ubuntu2.

According to the Locations.xml file, the code for São Carlos is SBSA, if that is
correct, then METAR doesn't have any weather information for São Carlos:
http://weather.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mgetmetar.pl?cccc=SBSA
Comment 2 James Henstridge 2005-08-18 11:22:37 UTC
There was an airport in São Carlos, so it isn't surprising that there is an
airport code for the location.

It is also a fairly small town (~ 100,000 people, about 3 hours from São Paulo),
so it isn't too surprising that NOAA wouldn't track forcasts for it.

This does bring up questions about the quality of the locations list though: how
many other locations don't provide weather info?

This issue has also been reported on the Ubuntu Launchpad bug tracker:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/29703

The locations are different, however:

 * New Zealand/Dunedin
 * Australia/NSW/Williamtown

Thanks

I've had a cron job running on my machine on work for a while now.. I'll put together more complete info soon but a quick scan suggests that about 1/3 of the stations in the METAR list don't provide readings.

One option would be to add another element to each station location which lists out the nearest 'n' stations based on the station coordinates. How does that sound?

Similar problem. Get no info if i choose sweden/östersund/frösön. But I know this airport changed its code to ESNZ not too long ago. All other locations(i have tried) work great.

Moving libgweather-specific bugs out of gweather-applet
Comment 8 Dan Winship 2008-11-30 00:57:58 UTC
the new Locations.xml.in code strips out non-reporting stations, so this is fixed as of 2.24
