GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 310191
strange symbols instead of quotation marks for section, figure, etc. numbers
Last modified: 2005-07-13 11:17:03 UTC
Version details: 2.6.5 Distribution/Version: gentoo to reproduce (always reproducible): run yelp on any manual, for example, planner's help I've got a problem with gnome-help - all section, figure etc. numbers are prefixed with some strange symbols. I've attached two screenshots: yelp_planner_manual.jpg - yelp showing the planner manual - lots of these strange symbols (looking like capital A with an arc above it) mozilla_mail_archive.jpg - mozilla showing http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2004-August/msg00025.html Maybe stuff described in this page has got smth to do with this issue, because the symbols are somewhat alike (only this is a lower-case a with a circumflex above it). Anyway, I tried many different fonts so probably this is not a font issue.

Created attachment 49077 [details] mozilla showing http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2004-August/msg00025.html this may be relevant to the bug - at least, the symbols look somewhat alike
This is a character encoding problem. Mozilla is interpreting the UTF-8 as some other character encoding, so it thinks it sees characters that aren't supposed to be there. This bug report says you're running a 2.6.x version of Yelp. Is that correct? (You can find the Yelp version in Help->About.)
Screenshots look very similar. Marking as DUPLICATE. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 300052 ***
yes, yelp 2.6.5, the latest ebuild in gentoo
