Description Murray Cumming 2005-07-07 14:38:10 UTC
When entering, for instance, German text on an English keyboard, I must remember
the German layout. An always-on-top keyboard preview would help me to remember.
The Keyboard Layout already has great keyboard previews, but they are only
visible when adding a new layout.

I've seen someone have particular difficulty entering Arabic text with a German
keyboard, for instance. In fact, arabic webmail sites sometimes use a Java
applet to show an onscreen keyboard.

Also, I guess that this could just be an extra "Show Preview" menu item in the
Keyboard Indicator.

Well, this is interesting idea. I will think of it... No promises regarding 2.12
though

Murray, it is not a big trouble to add popup ('Close'-buttoned) dialog with the
current layout. Is it what you envision? Or do you have something more sexy in mind?

Actually, this question aside - do you feel GOK and gnome-keyboard-properties
could share the approach to the keyboard display - or is it just another
worthless idea?

> it is not a big trouble to add popup ('Close'-buttoned) dialog with the
current layout

Yes, that's what I was thinking of. It would be nice if people could click on
the on-screen keyboard too.

GOK is a radically different on-screen keyboard for accessibility. It's not
meant to be like a real keyboard.

Murray, I put some stuff into CVS - so could you have a look please? It is not
finished yet (shows only first group and shows new window every time) - but at
least the UI is there for the critics. Comments are very welcome.
Comment 6 Danielle Madeley 2005-07-27 09:10:21 UTC
Be aware we're in feature freeze, and will soon be in lots of other freezes.
Comment 7 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2005-07-27 22:03:26 UTC
That is why I added UI before the freeze. And hope I'll add all the necessary
strings (one or two) RSN - so no freezes will be broken (except for the bugfixes).
Comment 8 Danielle Madeley 2005-08-03 18:47:17 UTC
Is this in then?
Comment 9 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2005-08-03 19:53:11 UTC
Yep. It should be in CVS. Is it working for you?
Comment 10 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2005-08-21 00:15:18 UTC
314052 is separate, irrelevant actually. I would really close this one - while
the other one is real, will be investigated.

Just to verify that if you want to view the current keyboard layout, you simply right-click on the keyboard indicator applet and choose Layout View.

Verified on Ubuntu Linux 6.06.
