Description Ville Ranki 2005-06-20 18:31:04 UTC
This usability fix is related to bug 308289 which
causes the following:
1. Log in to Gnome
2. Panel crashes and prompts to restart or close.
3. Both options causes lead to 2.

There should be a option to log out in the crash dialog, as
inexperienced user has no way to log out / restart if panel cannot
be run. Also a help text like "If the problem persists, log out and
choose another session (such as KDE) for troubleshooting." would be
good.
Maybe there could be options to reset panel (remove all applets
and other stuff that may cause crashing).

The "If the problem persists, log out and choose another session (such as KDE)
for troubleshooting." message couldn't be added for every distribution (like
ubuntu).
And does this still happens in newer version?
Comment 2 Ville Ranki 2005-07-18 21:36:51 UTC
No, my panel works currently fine.

The text could be something different, it could also include
hint to press ctrl-alt-F1 to get to text console for troubleshooting
if there are no other desktops available.
The main idea of this feature is:
- Panel should notice it's crashing
- It should give user a option to fix it, and/or
- Give user help how to troubleshoot the problem.
- Get out of the situation

Currently a novice user can't do anything except
turn computer off and/or call tech support.

When I asked you if still happens in newer version I wanted to know if you the
message was still the same when the panel crash (just to be sure before confirming).
Comment 4 Ville Ranki 2005-07-19 08:29:21 UTC
Is there a way to force panel to crash? My panel is working too well
to test it currently.
Comment 5 Vincent Untz 2005-07-19 18:46:09 UTC
The dialog does not come from the panel, but from libgnomeui. I don't think we
can change this.

Now, how could we notice that the panel is crashing? I mean, if the panel
crashes, then it can't tell you what to do :-) It seems that it should be
something to integrate in the new service framework...
Comment 7 Thierry Moisan 2005-07-21 13:20:41 UTC
Just an idea like that (I'm not a real developper) : we could notice that
gnome-panel crashed if see the message from libgnomeui.
Comment 8 Thierry Moisan 2005-07-21 13:22:30 UTC
Confirming since this still happens in gnome2.10

Enhancement request.
Comment 10 André Klapper 2020-11-07 12:15:36 UTC
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all
old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you still use gnome-panel and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
