GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 307979
"Edutainment" entry needs to go
Last modified: 2006-04-16 16:50:56 UTC
This bug has been opened here: http://bugs.debian.org/314491 "The new menus that came with Gnome 2.10 have a problem in the form of the new entry "Edutainment". Firstly, there is no such (real) word as "Edutainment". In my opinion the word sounds frankly stupid. It's a pathetic mangling of education with entertainment. If you mean Education, then say Education. Freedesktop.org has no such "edutainment" category, but it does have "Education" (see http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apa.html). Secondly, the "Edutainment" category is abusing other packages. kalzium and gperiodic have both ended up in it. Both of these programs are scientific reference programs, they are not games. They do not belong therefore in any "edutainment" category. In an Educational category, perhaps, but not "Edutainment". Even better still, arrange a Science science for them. Their own menu and desktop files place them in Science and/or Education, they do not mention any "Edutainment". The German entry in /usr/share/desktop-directories/Edutainment.directory says Bildung. That means Education, doesn't it? Not "Edutainment". Please, have pity on the English language! Drew"
Thanks, fixed on HEAD: 2005-06-28 Mark McLoughlin <mark@skynet.ie> Re-name the Edutainment sub-menu to Education. Bug #307979 * layout/applications.menu: s/Edutainment/Education/ * desktop-directories/Edutainment.directory.in: Re-name from Edutainmenut.directory.in and change the name. * desktop-directories/Makefile.am: upd.
Thanks for fixing this hideous butchering of the English langauge. Now to make sure some misguided soul doesn't try to put it back in.
