GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 305713
libgnome causes many apps to freeze/not load
Last modified: 2006-07-17 13:52:01 UTC
Please describe the problem: Things were going smoothly until one day, many of my apps stopped functioning properly. I tediously went through everything I have installed and finally discovered that libgnome is the culprit. Here are some examples of things that happen when libgnome is installed (and don't happen when libgnome is uninstalled): 1. "Save image as" or "save link as" in Firefox freezes Firefox. 2. Saving an attachment from Thunderbird freezes Thunderbird. 3. Right-clicking a file in Bluefish and choosing "rename" freezes Bluefish. 4. Azureus (gtk version) will not load. There are probably more examples but I noticed these right away. The first three seem to all have in common that they are supposed to open some sort of gtk dialog box, I believe? For what it's worth, I have deleted ~/.gnome, ~/.gnome2, ~/.gtkrc-2.0, etc. Nothing has helped. I've tried running these apps from terminal and I don't get any error msgs or anything like that. This has happened in both fvwm and xfce4. Please let me know what I can do to diagnose and fix this problem, I have resorted to uninstalling all of the gnome applications I use for now :( Steps to reproduce: 1. Install libgnome-2.10 2. Open firefox, choose "save image as" or open thunderbird and try to save an attachment, etc. 3. Actual results: Program freezes (or doesn't load). Expected results: GTK dialog box should appear (or program should load) Does this happen every time? yes Other information:
Please give some more information about your system. Distro, hardware, how you install packages, do you compile them yourself? If so, what compiler flags etc. You could try running one of the apps in gdb and wait until it hangs, then press ctrl+c and type bt to get a backtrace. I don't see how libgnome could cause apps that don't use it to hang, but stranger things have happened I guess. Could it be related to sound events and esd maybe? Is your DNS setup correct? Do you use DHCP and does the hostname change periodically? A bit more detail is needed :-)
I'm having exactly the same behaviour, at least with respect to Firefox and Thunderbird. I'm having problems too with K3b and file-roller, both start but only after some minutes!! I've got no messages on terminal or /var/log. All these apps worked fine two or three weeks ago (Arch Linux provides many packages updates daily, so it's difficult to point the culprit). I'll try to obtain the debug info sugested in Comment #1. Some info: $ uname -a Linux AMB 2.6.12-ARCH #1 SMP Fri Jul 8 11:38:10 PDT 2005 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2100+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux 256MB DDR333 RAM The packages are Arch packages that are gziped pre-compiled from source. Since we have access to the (bash) script used to compile the package I can provide you this information for the packages that are necessary. Some package versions: XFCE4: gtk-xfce-engine 2.2.7-1 libxfce4mcs 4.2.2-1 libxfce4util 4.2.2-1 libxfcegui4 4.2.2-1 xfce-mcs-manager 4.2.2-1 xfce-mcs-plugins 4.2.2-1 xfce-utils 4.2.2-1 xfce4-artwork 0.0.4-1 xfce4-iconbox 4.2.2-1 xfce4-mixer 4.2.2-1 xfce4-netload-plugin 0.3.1-1 xfce4-panel 4.2.2-1 xfce4-systray 4.2.2-1 xfce4-themes 4.0.6-1 xfce4-toys 4.2.2-1 xfce4-trigger-launcher 4.2.2-1 xfce4-weather-plugin 0.4.9-1 GTK: gtk 1.2.10-4 gtk+extra 1.0.0-1 gtk-engines 2.6.3-2 gtk-perl 0.7009-6 gtk-xfce-engine 2.2.7-1 gtk2 2.6.8-1 pygtk 2.6.2-1 wxgtk 2.6.1-1 Gnome: gnome-common 2.8.0-9 gnome-desktop 2.10.2-1 gnome-icon-theme 2.10.1-2 gnome-keyring 0.4.3-1 gnome-menus 2.10.2-1 gnome-mime-data 2.4.2-1 gnome-vfs 2.10.1-4 libgnome 2.10.1-1 libgnomecanvas 2.10.2-1 libgnomeui 2.10.1-1 KDElibs: kde-common 3.4.1-1 kdelibs 3.4.1-2 Mozilla/Firefox/Thunderbird: mozilla 1.7.8-1 mozilla-common 1.0-2 mozilla-firefox 1.0.4-1 mozilla-thunderbird 1.0-1 K3b: k3b 0.12.2-1 file-roller: file-roller 2.10.3-1
Can't reproduce this here. Scott, is your setup similar to the one described in comment #3?
Scott, is this still valid?
