GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 304956
"filesystem" tree label should be "file system"
Last modified: 2005-07-11 18:56:08 UTC
The Nautilus tree view on my system has two entries: "Home Folder" and "Filesystem". The term "Filesystem" is bad English in the same way as "Filename" and "Username". They appear in some computer documentation because they are the name of a C indentifier which may not contain spaces. In user documentation and user interfaces, there is no good reason for these terms to be artificially made a compound noun. I ask that this be renamed to "File System", which is more consistent with the other entry "Home Folder". I would also wonder if we couldn't find better names for these. Perhaps "<user>'s Files" and "All Files" or something similar.
This is in fact true. The GNOME style guide suggests to "(s)pell (it) as two words, do not use filesystem." [1]. Note that this also affects GTK+. [1] http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/gnome-glossary-generic-terms.html
