Description Ari Pollak 2005-05-20 16:46:38 UTC
From Debian bug report http://bugs.debian.org/309938

The word "Transparency" in gimp has two different meanings.

1. "Transparency" as in "degree of transparency", indicating how transparent a
layer is. In Chinese this is translated "透明度" and is the current translation.

2. "Transparency" in the "Advanced options" in File|New, indicating that the new
layer should be transparent. In Chinese this should be translated "透明".

The two meanings are distinct, and the translations are NOT interchangeable. In
either case, it would be wrong to use the other translation; as a result, the
"Advanced options" in gimp's File|New currently has a wrong Chinese translation
that cannot be fixed.

To fix this, the word "Transparency" in "Advanced options" should be reworded.

I should note that this bug report refers to zh_TW. The zh_CN translation is
slightly different.
Comment 2 Sven Neumann 2005-05-20 17:11:46 UTC
Instead of rewording (what would be a good alternative?), we could also start to
use the Q_() feature introduced with glib-2.6. This allows us to add context
information to translatable strings. I know of at least one other language that
has a similar problem (czech). The drawback is that this adds more translatable
strings and that it adds a possible source for errors introduced by translators
not familiar with this new concept. Something to consider for 2.4.
Comment 3 Ari Pollak 2005-05-20 21:20:03 UTC
It turns out that this is just a mistranslation in the zh_TW locale, and the
string shouldn't have to be changed.
Comment 4 Abel Cheung 2005-07-30 01:27:47 UTC
The translation wording should have been fixed some time ago.
(Well, I don't realize this bug report before uploading translation)

BTW, the different meanings in english words can pose real
problems in translation, which can only be solved by either
rewording or adding context. So this bug report has real merit.

Adding new strings is not a problem at all, since rewording also
adds new strings. Making sure all translators understand how to
handle context info can be a real challenge though.

Should I close this report and open new one (in order to request
Q_() support), or just reuse this bug report?
Comment 5 Sven Neumann 2005-07-30 13:31:26 UTC
Please close and open a new one. Thanks.
Comment 6 Abel Cheung 2006-10-16 22:24:15 UTC
This bug report is long overdue. I've just taken a look at gimp 2.3.11, and the new image
dialog has the correct translation now. So this bug can be closed. If 2.2 series still has
wrong translation, feel free to reopen this bug report.
