GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 301823
nautilus-connect-server reorder name_entry to top and don't remove
Last modified: 2008-04-16 09:48:37 UTC
Distribution: Fedora Core release 3 (Heidelberg) Package: nautilus Severity: trivial Version: GNOME2.10.0 2.10.x Gnome-Distributor: Red Hat, Inc Synopsis: nautilus-connect-server reorder name_entry to top and don't remove Bugzilla-Product: nautilus Bugzilla-Component: general Bugzilla-Version: 2.10.x Description: Every type of connections have name_entry essentially. I think it'll be more clear to place name_entry on first row of dialog, above combo box. And the dialog always remove the essential entry from box and add again, whenever type of connection changed by combo box. It's waste of time. After placing first row, we can never touch its position, I believe. ------- Bug moved to this database by unknown@bugzilla.gnome.org 2005-04-24 20:09 ------- Unknown platform unknown. Setting to default platform "Other". Unknown milestone "unknown" in product "nautilus". Setting to default milestone for this product, '---' Setting to default status "UNCONFIRMED". Thanks for your bug report! > I think it'll be more clear to place name_entry on first row of dialog, above combo box. Why? Isn't the most important information the type of server you want to connect to, instead of its label? In my opinion, the server type widget is the central UI element. > And the dialog always remove the essential entry from box and add again, whenever type of connection changed by combo box. It's waste of time. Is it very common to first enter a name, and then enter the rest of information? The current design is not name-centric. The name is even an optional information. We could of course change that by making the name mandatory and auto-filling it with the server name if it's empty, but I don't why the current UI is wrong.
Sure it is all about connection details. But, on desktop, people just remember the icon and label. Then click. So I suggest the position of name entry as first of all.
Usability squad, any opinions?
The current dialog is a mess anyway. Bryan and I posted a redesign about a year ago to the nautilus list... I wonder if perhaps we should remove the "label" option anyway, and just allow the links to be rennamed (through the normal nautilus means) for people who are very picky about what things are called. But I would say we shouldn't move it to the top since, as Christian points out, the server to connect to is the most cogent detail.
Seth: Could you please try to find the email containing your proposals? Unfortunately, I'm unable to find it.
Here, I think: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/nautilus-list/2004-July/msg00044.html (Probably worth reading the rest of the thread as well.)
any updates on this?
Similar bug on https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/49198: "Nautilius network server and name field When setting up a new ssh connection you have to fill in the fields in the following order (translated from Norwegian): - Server - Extra information (?) - Port - Folder - Username - Name of connection This has bother me on several times, because after I entered the username I automatically types the password and press enter before I have checked the values. This not only means that I have to start the prosess all over, because I can't edit the values, but also that my passwords appears in plain text on my desktop. So I propose the following dialog: - Server - Port - Folder - Username Name of the connection is automatically set to the server name, but should of course be editable afterwards by pressing F2 or right clicking like on ordinary files."
Apart from the big redesigning of the dialog, which is bug #139105, I think this bug can be closed, as now in 2.22 we have just an "add to bookmark" checkbox, toggled off by default. Closing as OBSOLETE, please open a new bug or follow the discussion on bug #139105 for other UI improvements of that dialog.
