GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 266779
No context menu outside of columns makes adding columns hard
Last modified: 2021-05-19 12:14:31 UTC
Please fill in this template when reporting a bug, unless you know what you are doing. Description of Problem: Add a column.. Option is not working properly when the task list has only category and type Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Right click on the Bar that is just above the task list (This bar would typically have two icons a 'notepad' , 'a checkbox' and text 'summary').. 2. Just make sure that we have only two columns on the bar viz, type (notepad) and complete (checkbox). Remove anyother columns if you have 3. Now right click on the bar and say 'Add a column...' 4. Try to drag and drop any of the columns in the list Actual Results: Drag and drop doesn't work Expected Results: I should be able to add columns using DND How often does this happen? Always Additional Information: I could DND the columns if i have any columns with text in it.
You can do this, you just have to drag the column to the edge of one of the existing columns to get the red arrows to appear.
I tested this and looks pretty major, since "Add a column" doesn't work when you remove all columns. (I guess E-table handles this, but since no columns are available to right-click, there's no context menu) To work around this you have to select a different view but the original view gets borked forever unless you edit it on views adding the columns selecting fields. This is non-intuitive. So upping the priority.
How did you remove all columns? AFAIK we always force there to be atleast one column.
in evolution-2.2.0.0.200503210410-0.snap.ximian.10.1, one cannot remove all columns, if there is only one column left the option is greyed out. having only one column i had no problems to add new columns by drag'n'drop. only thing that's valid with this report is gerardo's comment that it's not intuitive that one has to right-click on an existing column title (which can be pretty little when it got only the size of an icon) to get the context menu and that it does not work in the large area right of the existing column. so retargetting to 2.3, adding UI.

Based on the Andre's comment, I checked up the same on 2.2.1. I am able to remove all the columns in the customize current view but the it is not editing when I click OK and say apply. And even after removing all the colums, the remove, move down and the move up buttons in "customize current view > Fields shown" are not greyed out. I am also including a snapshot of the same.

Moving it to minor. Why would some one remove all?
why not? anyway, gal/e-table bug.

(In reply to comment #6) > Based on the Andre's comment, I checked up the same on 2.2.1. I am > able to remove all the columns in the customize current view In 2.28.0 it is still possible to create a zero column view (which rather confuse evolution). Should be a separate bug. > but the > it is not editing when I click OK and say apply. And even after > removing all the columns, the remove, move down and the move up buttons > in "customize current view > Fields shown" are not greyed out. Not sure what this exactly means, but both "Customize Current View..." and "View > Current View > Define Views..." still are full of GUI bloopers and HIG deviations (ie, their interfaces need serious love).
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/Community/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new bug report ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
