Description Justin Georgeson 2003-10-03 21:37:23 UTC
When viewing an email, the Normal display setting shows the subject,
sender, date, and all recipients in what appears the email body area.
Mozilla shows the headers in a widget which is obviously a different
widget, which is also collapsable to a single line showing subject, sender,
and date, also an icon to indicate the presence of attachments. I find this
minimal display highly desirable. On a 12 inch monitor (laptop) it doesn't
take very many recipients for the header display area to take up half the
text area in the message body.
Comment 1 Gerardo Marin 2003-10-06 01:20:04 UTC
I-m quite sure this is a duplicate request
Comment 2 Justin Georgeson 2003-10-07 19:14:19 UTC
I looked and bug 202024 is pretty similar. It requests a length limit
per field, I suggest a single line with the three most important
fields. Also, bug 202024 was created in march '01, was last commented on
in july '01, is still marked NEW, and is assigned to
evolution-mail-maintainters@ximian.com. So it was requested 2.5 years
ago, and seems to have been left there.
Comment 3 André Klapper 2004-10-11 09:42:57 UTC
one now can say which fields to display in the preferences in
evolution1.5-2.0.0.0.200409211947-0.snap.ximian.8.1.
is that suitable enough && can we close this one?
Comment 4 Justin Georgeson 2004-10-12 02:03:08 UTC
While that is an interesting feature it doesn't have the convenience
of what I'm asking for. It also doesn't condense the header display
into one line Perhaps if you could create profiles of headers to
display, and then have those profiles populate the 'Message Display'
submenu of the View menu. I can attach screenshots of
mozilla/thunderbird if you like.
Comment 5 André Klapper 2005-11-25 00:41:46 UTC
reassigning jpr's old evolution\miscellaneous bugs to harish
Comment 6 Karsten Bräckelmann 2006-02-19 05:25:06 UTC
If I get this right (the first part of the original report), this is a request to limit the height of any header, taking up 1 or 2 lines only -- regardless how many recipients there are, for example.

This is useful, IMHO. Proposed UI: One of those arrows displayed for any header that exceeds the threshold indicating there is more content, which can expanded on the fly.

Comment 8 Justin Georgeson 2006-02-19 06:31:38 UTC
That's close to what I was asking for, but still not quite. I've attached three screenshots to illustrate. All three are showing the same email, one in evolution, and two in thunderbird. The one in evolution shows how an email with many recipients has a very large header display, approximately half the email preview pane. In thunderbird with the expanded header display, the To header has the threshold UI you're suggesting. In thunderbird with the condensed hear display, there is one line total to show three headers (Subject, From, Date).

Justin, I did understand this. But thanks for the illustrating screenshots anyway, makes it easier to grok for anyone else later.

I specifically referred to the first part in comment 6, cause I really do see its usefulness and agree with that part of the request.

However, I doubt the usefulness of the "condensed" header. As your screenshot clearly shows, it merely repeats the info which already is clearly visibly highlighted in the mail list. Since it takes about the same space, it does not add any value, IMHO.

In that case, the headers even could be not displayed at all. Which is another filed bug I came across yesterday. ;)

Justin, a quick hint you might find useful, as this bug is about screen real-estate: GNOME Desktop Preferences, Menus & Toolbars, try "Text beside icons", rather than "Text below icons" (command 'gnome-ui-properties'). HTH

Adjusting keywords, Summary. Component Mailer. Probably GtkHTML, though.
Comment 15 André Klapper 2006-05-10 00:51:59 UTC
for not showing any headers, see bug 331055.

adding srini to cc as he is working on something similar according to http://blogs.gnome.org/view/sragavan/2006/05/08/0
Comment 16 Srinivasa Ragavan 2006-05-10 03:18:35 UTC
Thanks a lot andre. The blogs shows a initial work of the proposal, to add a +/- next to the header to cut it short based on a configurable number of addresses to be shown.
Comment 17 André Klapper 2006-06-17 23:55:36 UTC
still valid in 2.7, updating version number.
Comment 18 Matthew Barnes 2008-03-11 00:31:38 UTC
Bumping version to a stable release.
Comment 19 André Klapper 2012-02-08 11:18:38 UTC
I think this is pretty much achieved now in Evolution 3.2.3.
You can shorten the header display in only one line to only see Subject and Sender. It does not show the time though.

Closing as FIXED, please reopen if you still miss something.
