Patch for 2.8.1 (Ubuntu edgy) to add a 'Latest Sent' column (2.66 KB, patch)

Description Vladimir Vukicevic 2001-06-05 14:15:12 UTC
It would be very useful if Evo had an option to sort threads based on date of newest unread message, instead of the first message in the thread. This keeps biting me -- I view my mail threaded, but as new mail comes in, threads are pushed farther and farther up, even if they have lots of activity. This especially sucks for short conversations with important people. :-)
Comment 1 Luis Villa 2001-06-07 14:37:24 UTC
Added a new keyword (RFE, Request For Enhancement) to indicate feature
bugs. If applied consistently it should make it much easier to
separate feature requests from actual bugs.

feature = future
Comment 4 Adam Logghe 2001-11-30 05:09:24 UTC
Evolution is in excellent shape outside of this problem with
threading. I wish this could move up the priority list. I believe it
should be the default behaviour if there is concern about adding
configuration options at this date.

This forces me to "dethread" or else search through a 1000+ message
folder for unread messages at least 4-5 times per day. Very painful.
Comment 5 Jeffrey Stedfast 2001-11-30 17:28:46 UTC
you can always use the 'n' and 'p' keys for now.

there's no new features that will be added to 1.0, what you see in
0.99.2 is what you get.
Comment 6 Vladimir Vukicevic 2002-09-30 03:31:24 UTC
As much as I hate to bump old bugs, has there been any progress or
talk regarding this?
Comment 7 Gerardo Marin 2002-09-30 16:59:54 UTC
No new features in a while (at least until 1.4 is released).
Comment 8 Joachim Breitner 2003-01-25 14:43:35 UTC
So will it be in 1.4?
(Just pushing this bug up, cause it is very important when reading
debian-devel or perl5-porters or the like)
Comment 9 Gerardo Marin 2003-01-27 17:08:44 UTC
No. 1.4 is a gnome2 port only.
With some luck we'll add features from 1.6 and on
Comment 10 Vladimir Vukicevic 2003-08-22 08:43:01 UTC
Is this going to make it into 1.6? :)

Any word on this? I'm using 2.0.1 and it's not in there. This would definately
be handy.
Comment 22 Michael R Head 2005-04-14 16:25:57 UTC
Could this be implemented in an plugin for 2.2?
Comment 23 Jeffrey Stedfast 2005-04-14 19:15:24 UTC
this requires fundamental changes to the way ETable works and no one on the
current evo team understands the ETable code at all.

there's talk of moving the message-list widget to derive from GtkTreeView, but
that widget simply doesn't scale at all. So.... this probably won't happen for
quite a while yet.

patches always welcome :)

I don't suppose anyone has managed to learn the Etable code yet? :)
Comment 27 Matt McCutchen 1 2006-04-12 22:15:59 UTC
Me too: I'm watching several mailing lists, and it would be very nice to have all unread messages near the bottom so I can find them without "View" -> "Hide Read Messages".

Another possible solution: don't show threads in the main list, but have a separate box that shows the thread containing the current message.

I would vote for the bug if this Bugzilla installation supported voting.
Comment 28 Sven Arvidsson 2006-12-06 19:03:19 UTC
Any chance of this being added to 2.10?
Comment 29 Matthew Barnes 2007-01-02 18:43:48 UTC
This was also requested downstream:
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=133803

I agree that it would be useful, though it may require additional UI to allow for toggling between the current and this new thread sorting behavior. I would definitely use it but others may prefer the current way.
Comment 30 C.J. Collier 2007-03-27 23:05:59 UTC
I like this idea, too. Anyone know where in the code to look?

Patch for 2.8.1 (Ubuntu edgy) to add a 'Latest Sent' column

Instead of diving into ETable, I've added a 'Latest Sent' column which shows the sent date of latest message in a thread (if 'Group By Threads' is enabled otherwise just the sent date). This makes it a small patch with very limited UI implications.
Although it would have been possible to use this column as a compare column and make it hidden, that would have lead to new preference setting introductions.
The patch has been made against the 2.8.1-0ubunty4.1 (Ubuntu Edgy).
Comment 32 Mikael Nilsson 2007-05-24 22:24:54 UTC
Does this patch apply to latest evo (2.10.1 or so)?

This seems to me like a good compromise - I'd certainly be prepared to accept this as a workaround.

Am I wrong, or has this been fully implemented in evolution 2.11.3??

I think this bug can be closed! Thanks, developers.
Comment 35 Tobias Mueller 2007-08-15 14:57:11 UTC
I think you mean the "gmail like sorting" which was introduced since rev 33553
http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/evolution?view=revision&revision=33553

Hence obsoleting the patch and closing this bug :)
