GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 169998
floppy and cdrom unmounted icon as used in drivemount hard to distinguish
Last modified: 2006-07-08 22:09:35 UTC
The drivemount applet is showing two identical icons which makes it somewhat harder to distinguish the button for usb and cdrom. And there doesn't seem to be any way to change the icons.
I think there should be a cd-rom in front of the cd-rom drive and a floppy on the front of the floppy drive. Also a usb sign (the three pointers thing) in front of a usb device. There is also no difference for a cd-rom drive and a floppy drive wich can be confusing sometimes. Also it would be a great idea to maybe put different colors on the cd-rom or floppy or usb sign to be able to distinguish two cd-rom/floppy/usb drives at the first look. Colors shouldn't be random so that after some time we know that, for example, blue is the first one and red is the second one.
I just plugged in my jumpdrive. It shows up as a grey box (harddrive?) with a USB icon superimposed on top of it. Seems OK to me.
Good, but there is still no difference between a floppy drive and a cd-rom drive. Except of course the label shown when you pass over the drives with your mouse. But what we want here is something to show quickly what is the drive.
This is not a gnome-applets bug. We're now using the icon theme to get the icons for those boxes, so the problem is that the 16x16 icons in the standard theme are hard to distinguish. I'm going to reassign this.
Sounds like a valid issue. Would you guys agree that making the floppy icon have a much larger "hole" and perhaps adding some color to it would solve this?
Yeah I think it would be a good idea since adding a floppy disk would be hard in an icon of that size. I think we could also add a little button on it like when you put a floppy disk in a floppy drive and that you have to push this button to take it out.
This should be folded into bug 309324 - request for lots of unmounted hardware icons.

I'm marking this fixed. The current icons in CVS are distinct. The drive-cdrom icon has a CD sticking out, and the drive-removable-media icon has a slot with a pushbutton. The media-* icons are obviously distinguished as well.
