GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 167334
chm support
Last modified: 2009-11-02 11:21:42 UTC
It would be nice to integrate also support for viewing chm files. Good resource page for this topic: http://htmlhelp.berlios.de/formats/chm.php

Hi, thanks for the bug report. We had discussed this on the mailing list and decided against implementing this in Evince. Instead it was agreed that Yelp would be the optimal application for viewing this type of file. So I'm going to close this. You can take a look at the discussion here: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/evince-list/2005-January/msg00020.html

I agree yelp would be the optimal application, however yelp doesn't support it yet and AFAIK there are no plans to support it (correct me if I'm wrong). So maybe, adding support in evince is the only way to have a good CHM reader in GNOME desktop.

Note that evince uses now a plugin system for the backends which means that anybody can write its own backend and use it in evince without modifying nor even recompiling evince.
