It would be nice to integrate also support for viewing chm files.

Hi, thanks for the bug report.  

We had discussed this on the mailing list and decided against implementing this
in Evince.  Instead it was agreed that Yelp would be the optimal application for
viewing this type of file.  So I'm going to close this.

I agree yelp would be the optimal application, however yelp doesn't support it yet and AFAIK there are no plans to support it (correct me if I'm wrong). So maybe, adding support in evince is the only way to have a good CHM reader in GNOME desktop.

Note that evince uses now a plugin system for the backends which means that anybody can write its own backend and use it in evince without modifying nor even recompiling evince.
