GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 164901
Desktop menu vs Places->Desktop menu entry
Last modified: 2005-01-25 13:54:29 UTC
Why the same word is used in two places? Is it good for i18n/l10n? Is it good for users? Maybe is better rename the Desktop menu? Actions menu? System menu?
See bug #89874 for discussion about this. However, having the Desktop place is kind of problematic. Bryan, any idea?
Well, here in Italy we have: * desktop as place on screen -> "scrivania" is the translation [1] * desktop as environment(DE) -> keep desktop untranslated [2] Currenly we don't translate the desktop-as-place on GNOME, because there is no full i18n support, but Apple on MacOS should do it. Microsoft instead keep it untranslated, so many people undestand only the fist meaning. :-( [1] as in http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/gnome-glossary-desktop.html#term-desktop [2] as in http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/gnome-glossary-desktop.html#term-desktop-environment
Ugh, can I refrane and say that I was always one for keeping Desktop == HOME :-) I see the wording is the same in two different places, but users understand the different context they are in. The surrounding items of 'Desktop' in the Places menu gives context to mean that it's probably related to the Desktop Folder. While the other 'Desktop' is a main menu has different context related to it. For translation I'm not sure how to solve this, you bring up a good point about the Desktop Environment vs. Desktop Place. I would say we want the Desktop (old Actions) to be the Environment translation and not the place. Is there a way to convey this in a comment or something for all the translators?
Somewhere on gtkmm is suggested to add "comments" to remove in translations Something like: #: gnome-panel/panel-menu-bar.c:591 msgid "Desktop|Resource" msgstr "" #: gnome-panel/panel-menu-bar.c:592 msgid "Open the desktop as a folder" msgstr "" #: gnome-panel/panel-menu-bar.c:777 msgid "Desktop|Menu" msgstr "" Os course the |* will be removed in translation (so add a tip for translators), I don't know about C locale
cc'ing Christian, because he might know how this works :-)
If you're referring on how to use context markers, there is support in glib for that. See bug 97556. However, the current support in glib has an important drawback in that it doesn't work if the translator translates the context as well by accident; see bug 164373 for that discussion.
Thanks. Fixed in HEAD.
