Description Nikolai Weibull 2005-01-14 23:36:55 UTC
Please describe the problem:
This file clutters my ls -a listing of my home directory. I see no reason for
its existence, as I do not run gnome1, but gnome2. I don't run gtk+ 1.2.10 and
I don't run ee....just get rid of this insanely retarded handling of retardation.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Switch from the Windows Desktop to the Linux Desktop
2. Watch as your home directory--your sanctuary--gets cluttered by an insane
number of files and directories.
3. Rejoice.

Actual results:
I get very upset, which brings me just that much closer to my first heart
attack, at an age of 24.

Expected results:
I would expect my home directory to be clear of files like .recently-used,
.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2, .gnome2, .gnome2_private, .gstreamer-0.8, .thumbnails,
.ICEauthority, .Xauthority, and perhaps even .xscreensaver. Fine, not all of
these are your fault, but some are. Can we please adopt the XDG Base Directory
Specification sooner rather than later?

Does this happen every time?
Yes, yes, yes!

This is like bug 154421
Comment 2 Nikolai Weibull 2005-01-15 00:01:29 UTC
Yeah, sorry about that. Seems I should have thought this through a bit more
before posting. Really sorry all...was trying to vent some steam, this should
most likely never have been reported. Still, anyone have an idea of how soon we
can see XDG Base Directory Specification support in GNOME?
Comment 3 Lionel Dricot 2006-04-11 18:49:14 UTC
the ~/.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2 is still there and not very useful :

# Autowritten by gnome-settings-daemon. Do not edit

include "/home/ploum/.gtkrc.mine"

(but there is no .gtkrc.mine !)
Comment 4 Lionel Dricot 2008-04-07 11:54:49 UTC
having this file also doesn't comply with Freedesktop spec so I had this bug as a dependancy of the XDG tracker bug.

It's not completely related but well in the same "$HOME spring cleaning" scope.
Comment 5 Bastien Nocera 2010-10-13 16:48:18 UTC
The code to create the gtkrc files doesn't exist anymore, and I just removed the last remnants of code that were using the ~/.gnome2 directory in gnome-settings-daemon.

The rest should be handled through specific bugs.
