GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 162986
Shortcut character collisions in swedish
Last modified: 2009-01-01 20:57:38 UTC
In the main image window, in the toplevel menu: _Redigera collides with Filte_r and _Välj collides with _Visa and _Verktyg And in the _Arkiv menu: Öppna _senaste collides with _Spara and Spara _som and _Skriv ut In the _Redigera menu: _Ångra [action] collides with _Ångringshistorik _Buffert collides with Fyll med _bakgrundsfärg _Stryk val collides with Kopiera _synligt In the _Visa menu: _Punkt för punkt collides with Snä_pp mot hjälplinjer Visa _markering collides with Fullskär_m There are plenty more, in most of the menus. I'm still just using Gimp 2.0.2 so maybe it would be a waste to list everything until I've upgraded. But, just out of curiosity, isn't there a standard way to avoid shortcut character collisions? Like having the same shortcut character between apps? My jaw dropped when I first saw "Spara _som" - care had obviously been taken not to use the first character, but why bother when you're still using an 's'? I guess it's by analogy of "Save _as". Most apps I've seen use "Spara so_m." Note: I've been away from the scene a while, so if anyone has any polite pointers on how to write better bug reports than this, I'll gladly hear it. I feel a bit lost. (Clarification: that means specific comments on errors I made in this report, not general bug report writing style.)
Some of these, like "Öppna _senaste" are stock parts of Gtk and/or Gnome, I believe, and can't be changed directly. I may be wrong. It's a good question whether we shouldn't try to keep the same keyboard shortcuts for the same operation when it appears in different places, or if it is more important to avoid collisions at all cost. Using stock items is as far as I know the only way to get consistent shortcuts. I will attempt to rectify at least some of these (have wanted to do so for some time already), but don't expect miracles. It is a mess.
Mnemonic collisions are not considered a bug since GTK+ handles the collision. Also your bug-report is about an old version of GIMP. Please check GIMP 2.2 and if you think there are problems with the swedish translation, file them against the l10n product, component swedish and try to get in contact with the translators. I am reasssigning the bug now.
IMHO access key collisions should always be regarded as bugs when they can be avoided. It's a case of the application not working as optimal as it could, even though GTK+ can now somewhat compensate for this if it still happens, and will allow a (hidden) second means of accessing a duplicated access key. That, however, doesn't mean there is not a problem for the user facing this. Reassigning to Janne as he's the one in charge of the Swedish GIMP translation.
Hm, I thought I'd already assigned it to myself. The gtk way of handling it (close the menu, try again, and you jump to the next in line) is not really optimal so yes, I agree with Christian - when we can avoid collisions, we really should. And as translators, we are the ones that make this happen for translated versions. What we can do is limited, though. Items with the same name should (and will) have the same access key everywhere, and in a large, complex app like Gimp, you will get the occasional collision at the best of times. What we can do, really, is to get rid of the most common collisions, like in the main menus, and trust bug reports to catch the rest.
