While I can:
1. Drag files from Nautilus to file-roller,
2. Drag files from gthumb to Nautilus,
I can't drag files from gthumb to file-roller.

When I try to, file-roller displays the error message "Could not perform the
operation" upon dropping.

You should verify that you accept the DnD format which gthumb emits.
