Description Hubert Figuiere (:hub) 2004-11-16 19:03:42 UTC
When typing a name that don't resolve on DNS, Epiphany sends it to google.

1/ default behavior is wrong and violate my privacy
2/ there is not even an option in the Privacy tab to disable it.
Comment 1 Christian Persch 2004-11-16 23:03:56 UTC
Looks like https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95390 .

Maybe we should disable keyword search by default ?
Comment 2 Hubert Figuiere (:hub) 2004-11-16 23:08:52 UTC
Sounds like a good idea to me.
Comment 3 James Morrison 2004-11-17 02:53:03 UTC
Noo, keep it on by default, it soo nice.
Comment 4 Reinout van Schouwen 2004-11-22 22:44:15 UTC
Perhaps open a local page with an automagically created link to use
$FAVOURITE_SEARCH_ENGINE to do a query for the keywords?
Comment 5 Christian Persch 2005-08-26 10:39:26 UTC
Keyword searches are now disabled by default. Leaving the bug open for the
suggestion from comment 4; re-titling.
Comment 6 oa 2005-09-05 06:53:07 UTC
ouch! Please revert. This functionality is perhaps the top 1 reason I use
Epiphany instead of Firefox!
Comment 7 Christopher Lee 2005-09-06 18:22:57 UTC
*Please* revert this!!! I found the search behavior previously very intuitive,
but now searching is awkward. The version in ubuntu hoary where I have to press
the down arrow to explicitly do the search (to 'Search the web') I find a good
way to both preserve fast access to searching while avoiding the original complaint.
Comment 8 Mike Tyson 2005-09-10 00:36:56 UTC
Perhaps a compromise may work better - Would having a small search entry,
accessible with Ctrl-K, beside the location bar be acceptable? (Like Firefox)

At least then we can avoid having to go via google.com first, which is quite
inconvenient in comparison.

I think this solution provides much better visibility than the prior mechanism -
I've seen time after time people not realise they can type search terms straight
into the URL bar, and instead bring up Google first.
Comment 9 Mike Tyson 2005-09-10 00:39:26 UTC
(Correcting myself)

Incidentially, I'm aware that there's a smart bookmark system that provides this
functionality - I'm just suggesting that it becomes a default setup =)
Comment 10 Jean-François Fortin Tam 2005-09-19 00:56:09 UTC
yeah, so I was used all long to that google "normal search", so I type "epiphany
browser" (to do a normal google search) and I get a "invalid url"? Come on! If I
type "epiphany", I'll get to epiphany.com. Not what I want. Google's lucky
search is what it is called: a lucky search.
Comment 11 Christian Persch 2005-09-27 20:22:15 UTC
I re-enabled keyword searches for bug 314974. The original report in comment 0
is WONTFIX; but leaving open for the suggestion of comment 4.
Comment 12 Jean-François Fortin Tam 2006-08-28 18:23:44 UTC
Okay, I'd just like to have confirmation here: is it me or epiphany once again reverted to the lucky-search-only thing in 2.15.91? I hate the behavior, and it won't work even if I set the keyword.URL key value myself. Or is this a bug? Has anything been planned/discussed about the searches that I don't know about?
Comment 13 Reinout van Schouwen 2006-08-28 20:14:44 UTC
The change is not intentional, it is related to the mozilla backend.
Comment 14 Diego Escalante Urrelo (not reading bugmail) 2006-11-15 05:15:44 UTC
Reinout: your suggestion in comment #4 is nice, it can give some feedback to first time Epiphany users.
I don't know it would be possible to have some kind of link or button on that page to select "don't show this again, send me straight to the results".

That way everyone is happy :).

Nowadays you just get an error message. Resolved -> Obsolete
