Suggestion for alternative positioning for preview widget
Last modified: 2014-11-23 03:59:55 UTC
In a file dialog using the preview widget and filter dropdown, the filter dropdown is positioned under the preview. Screenshot and suggested alternative attached.

Or is there a way to tweak this I didn't think of.
Why should this change be done? You haven't given any rationale whatsoever and your mockup doesn't follow the established user interface conventions. For example it moves the buttons in the action area out of the lower right corner of the dialog. It will also break applications that put something else than a checkbutton as the extra widget. I suggest to dismiss this request and close as WONTFIX. For the moment I set this to NEEDINFO to give Caolan a chance to explain the suggested changes.
Caolans proposal has the advantage that the buttons are not jumping around on the screen as you are going through the list, if the previews are not all of the same size. Note that the original filechooser design called for the previews to be displayed outside the actual dialogs, which would give the same benefit.
Alright, let's start afresh with a different approach in bug 740569... *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 740569 ***
