GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 153909
Version of Metacity shipping with Garnome-2.8.0 is incorrect
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
I just downloaded the garnome-2.8.0.tar.bz2 tarball off http://cipherfunk.org/garnome/ and noticed that it is using metacity-2.8.1, i.e. the version of Metacity that shipped with Gnome 2.6.x. The version that is supposed to be used with Gnome 2.8.0 is metacity-2.8.5. This may have been due to versioning confusion; Havoc wanted the Metacity version number to finally match the Gnome version (it had been ahead in version numbers), so he made a 2.8.1.x stable branch for gnome 2.6.x, made versions 2.8.2-2.8.4 be unstable, and now 2.8.5 is stable.
Actually, this was because i'd had a few reports (one debian stable, one RHEL3 based) of 2.8.5 not building for some reason, but 2.8.1 w/the gar-base.diff was fine for them. Given we were at release time, I made the decision to leave it alone, pending more information (which I still haven't received) post-2.8.0 time.
Really? Is there any chance you could find the original reports and point me to them? I've been helping with Metacity development, and we'd really like to fix any build problems that might be there. I follow the metacity-qa alias and I haven't seen any such reports, so I'm sure no such problem has been fixed--but it should be before Gnome 2.8.1 comes out next week...
Garnome 2.8.1 is using the right version, so I'm just going to close this bug.
