GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 150116
Shift-select doesn't work properly in manual ordering mode
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:47:51 UTC
When trying to select a range of files if ordering is set to manual, the range of files is determined by file names instead of spatial location. This is especially obvious on the desktop where there is no auto-sort.

Created attachment 49029 [details] [review] Proposed patch against HEAD I've also submitted this patch to the nautilus mailing list [1] for review. [1] http://mail.gnome.org/archives/nautilus-list/2005-July/msg00128.html

I don't think that's a good idea. If I have auto layout on, I expect shift+click to select a range of file names. (I can always drag a rectangle selection if I need to.)
Josh: This bug report is about manual layout.
In the mailing list, it looks like you suggested that shift+click do a rectangular selection even in auto layout. I don't think that's right. In auto layout, the files are sorted, so it should be easy to select a range of files by name or size or date.
Comment on attachment 49029 [details] [review] Proposed patch against HEAD Marking obsolete as there are about five newer versions on the list.
Ping? Did we ever get any version of this patch in? It seems like shift+select is working how it should now (at least in my view), but I could be missing something.

Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
