GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 149838
standard add some photos for the face browser
Last modified: 2005-03-11 00:00:54 UTC
It would be nice if GDM, just like windows xp *cough*, would include some photos for the facebrowser. For example a horse, a monkey, a car, a flower, a motorbike etc. And put these in one directory (e.g. /usr/share/gdm/faces ) and not in /usr/share/pixmaps
Feel free to submit such photos, I have asked some people for such photos before but nobody every drew any. I can't draw, so it would not be good if I tried.
Can't draw either, but I can shoot photos. Maybe I can find you some free pics on the net, what's the best resolution for them?
George, do you accept photos from this site?? http://www.ecarboot.net/photolibrary/ The pictures are royalty/copyright free, the only restriction is that you cannot use them in a photo library. This last part might be incompatible with the GPL
BTW I already made 128x128 thumbnails out of 10 pics on that site before I noticed that the already mentioned restriction might be a problem. I also contacted the site with an explicit request if they can be used copyright free in an open source app like gdm
I got an answer from the site owner. He allows usage without any restrictions Here's the mail Return-Path: <support@ecarboot.net> Delivered-To: jaap@haitsma.org Received: (qmail 26977 invoked by uid 87); 27 Aug 2004 22:57:11 +0200 Received: from support@ecarboot.net by server1 by uid 81 with qmail-scanner-1.22 (clamscan: 0.74. spamassassin: 2.63. Yes you are free to use the thumbnail versions for your program. Good luck. jaap@haitsma.org wrote: >Hi, > >I sent you about a week ago a message about if I can use your photos in an open source program. In this program users can select a small thumbnail (128x128) to represent themselves. I thus downscaled your pics to 128x128. >The program is distributed under the GPL http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html >copyright license. This license gives you copyright over the work you created but you give the right to the user to do with the pictures what ever they want. This means that they can also put it in a photo gallery. But since the thumbnails are really small, I don't think anybody will do this. Would you be willing to give up your restriction on thos specific thumbnails I have. Otherwise I need to search for other free pictures, which do not have any restriction > > > > >. > > >
Created attachment 31048 [details] 10 faces Hope to see them in GDM soon
Created attachment 31343 [details] 10 faces but 64x64 pixels Hi George, Here are the 10 faces again but now with a size of 64x64. I find 128x128 personally way too big for faces. I noticed that gdm if you do not specify anything always scales the image to 128x128. I would suggest to make it standard 64x64
Added to CVS head.
