GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 149763
good replacement for xkb terms: "groups" and "layouts"
Last modified: 2009-10-19 08:58:30 UTC
We need help from GDP. Currently, gnome-keyboard-properties ("Layout Options" tab) uses terms from XKB docs (BTW, same story about gnome keyboard indicator). These terms, especially "group" and "layout" are misleading and confusing for non-technical people (even for technical but not familiar with XKB). These terms should probably be replaced with something clean and easy. Overall review of the "Layout Options" terminology is required.
Just explaining the XKB terms (from http://pdx.freedesktop.org/~xklavier/xkbconfig.pdf): A 'group' is a logical state of a keyboard, providing access to a collection of characters. Usually these characters belong together and may be arranged on several levels within a group (for simplicity, a 'level' can be considered as the state set by Shift/CapsLock/etc modifier keys). Layouts usually express national variations (eg. German) but they can also be used for alternate keyboard layouts (eg. Dvorak) or other such oddities. Any layout can describe one (eg. French) or several (eg. Russian) groups. Each group within a layout has unique name. A layout can optionally have several variants which usually represent small changes within the groups.
All 'groups' are now 'layouts'. If anyone is unhappy, please reopen.
