If I can adjust icon size on a per folder basis in nautilus. I should beable to
do the same with the desktop. Stretching icons is very cumbersome. My proposal
is a right click 'Preferences' option on the desktop which allows me to
configure things specific to the desktop.

- default icon size (should beable to zoom icons on the desktop as well, why was
this left out?)

- icon grid cell size (the default icon 'keep aligned' alignment is very
unprofessional looking, is this adjustable from the registry, it should be. A
simple choice of 4 or 5 vertical and horizonal compactness levels in relation to
the current icon zoom size would be ideal. default keep aligned grid should be
in the same place as non-keep aligned. Hard to explain but when you have keep
aligned selected your icons get pushed to the right about half an icon width
when issuing a 'clean up'. when non-keep aigned, a clean up puts them in a more
traditional location closer to the left side of the screen.

- all the other "alignment/sorting " options should be available, not just by name.

- all/most of the folder specific options (non-icon view still is really the
only valid display)

- icon position locking (don't see how this would be useful for general nautilus
browsing on the desktop it would be a super feature)

Hi Matthew,
please file only a request per report. It will be easier to triage and to be looked at by developers.
Locking icons is bug #301615, and there are other bugs opened (can't find them now) for the other issues you described.
The first issue instead is a good point. Right now, the icon size on the desktop, follows the choice for icon view, which is not optimal, and there should be a separate setting for it. I'm modifying the summary.

The symptom may seem the same as this bug, but pretty sure the cause is now different.

Now that zooming in folders is global, it affects the desktop too... so the cause must be different from the original 2004 version of this bug.

Still, makes the desktop pretty unusable if like me you zoom in on file windows where there are images or videos (your desktop icons suddenly become massive).

Re-confirming this still happens.

It's weird because I don't use the zoom as much in icon view - maybe something to do with the way the UI has changed over time.

Anyway, when I rarely do it, then later on revisit the desktop it's still odd to see that icons have gone mega sized.

Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
