Description Peter Novodvorsky 2004-06-15 03:09:01 UTC
Gnome Dictionary client (also other clients for
dict protocols) don't provide support for word
completion. With attached patch you can write a
word and see possible completions for it in the
windows under the textbox.

I am unable to open your patch - it looks like a binary file.
Could you attach an ASCII version of your patch ?

As you wished, I've attached the ASCII version of the patch.

I have tried your patch with gnome-utils 2.6.2. I have enabled the completion in
the preferences, but I cannot see any difference.
Can you give an example of how I could see the completion in action ?
Comment 5 Vincent Noel 2004-11-04 22:10:50 UTC
Ok, I got it working. It's very nice. Couple of comments :

The list of completion is ordered alphabetically, which is nice, but backwards -
ie I tried "house" and the top of the list is filled with "housewife" and such,
while "house" is located at the bottom of the list. The other way around would
make more sense.

Do you think it would be possible to show the same kind of list in the gdict
applet ? By limiting the number of choices to ~10.

Would it be possible to spell check the entered word directly in the same window
? e.g if I type "dyctionary" it could propose alternate spellings. Then we could
get rid of the spelling dialog altogether.

Thanks a lot for working on this, it's a lot of work you've done there.

gnome-dictionary was modified recently to switch to a regular GtkEntry.
Did you do any more work on this ?

Comment 8 André Klapper 2021-06-10 11:23:02 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of gnome-dictionary, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-dictionary/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
