Description Jerome Haltom 2004-05-26 22:02:28 UTC
I've been pondering a bit about a way to implement spring loaded folders.
Everybody is well aware of Apple's patent. Knowing this, I came up with another
idea.

A user should be able to select a file to be drag and dropped. The user should
be able to point and hover over a directory or container on the desktop. After a
certain set timeout, a contextual menu should pop up from that folder. This
contextual menu would list names and icons of the subitems of the pointed to
container. The user should be free to drop his item either a) on the original
container itself, or b) on any subitem of the container. Additionally sub items
of the container which are directories would have additional submenus, listing
their directory contents.

This would allow a user to select an item on the desktop and drag it DIRECTLY to
where he would like its final resting place to be in a single drag and drop
action, which is the main point of spring loaded folders in the first place.

This may be seen as breaking the spatial metaphore. That's for somebody else to
flame about. :)
