GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 141313
Use of A-Z button to sort data
Last modified: 2009-12-29 02:09:00 UTC
When you wish to sort the whole spreadsheet, using a single column as key, it would be handy to be able to select the column header -- if it has one, especially with a frozen pane -- and click on the "A-Z" or "Z-A" button. The complete sort window is nice, but a bit heavy for such a simple sort ... Since sorting a single cell does not make any sense, anyway, this could be a handy speedup. [And it's Excel-compatible, too ...] Thanks and kudos to all !
How would we know that you want to sort the wole spreadsheet rather than just the selected column?
Could you please describe what you are proposing in very concrete terms. (Something along the lines of "Put 1 in A1, ..., Click in A4, ...")
The way I understand it: put random numbers in A1:Z500. select C1 click on "A-Z" gnumeric sorts the whole spreadsheet by column C (I had missed the `single cell' part, so I had originally thought you meant: select column C rather than select C1)
Exactly Andreas, that's what I meant. Maybe it could go even a little further by allowing the selection of any single cell in a frozen pane, ie: - put labels and sub-labels in A1:Z3 - put random numbers in A4:Z500. - freeze lines 1 to 3 - select C2 or C3 - click on "A-Z" -> gnumeric sorts the whole spreadsheet by column C Of course, it would have to be documented ...
This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report. If a single cell is selected we sort the whole sheet below (and including) the row with the selected cell, according to the column of the selected sheet.
