Description Sven Neumann 2004-03-12 17:09:34 UTC
We need a final splash image for the 2.0 release. Should IMO be part of the
rc1 tarball already since I really want everything in this tarball to be
completely ready for 2.0.
Comment 1 Jakub Steiner 2004-03-12 17:48:31 UTC
I may fail to manage to devote some time for this. Here's some older
tests for the 2.0 splash screens

Comment 2 Andreas Røsdal 2004-03-12 19:04:10 UTC
Here's a suggestion I made some time ago. It's based on the gimp 1.0
splash screen, with elements from newer splash screens. Here:

Comment 3 Jakub Steiner 2004-03-12 19:54:16 UTC
The plain 2.0 splash we had for pre series is at
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/gimp2-splash/gimp-2.0a.png

An extended version that could be used to render the text+progressbar
on top:

various other variations:

Here's a mockup of text and progressbar rendered on top of the splash
image:

Or, render only the "through" of the progress-bar, like this:

Comment 5 Dave Neary 2004-03-12 20:40:35 UTC
The splash, while stylish, is a little plain, I think. Would it be
possible to get some elements of the GUI or examples of effects
montaged behind the text? A little more colour wouldn't hurt, given
that the splash is going to be the first thing people see of the new app
(something like the about dialog, which I like a lot).

Cheers,
Dave.

How about something like this (attachment above)?
Comment 8 Sven Neumann 2004-03-12 21:38:35 UTC
Can we please refrain from attaching splash images to this report?
URLs work much better for this.
Comment 9 Raphaël Quinet 2004-03-13 00:25:49 UTC
Here is another proposal based on the following idea: Wilber's tail
looks like a brush, so it can leave a colorful trail. In this example,
I tried to use some elements of the GIMP toolbox. But this looks a bit
too crowded so it may be better to use something else. Anyway, this is
only a test intended to give more ideas to jimmac.

Comment 10 Branko Collin 2004-03-13 02:21:01 UTC
Somebody mentioned on IRC that the above splash screens look like they
are for a vector image program rather than a bitmap image program. I
am not sure I agree, but I can see where they were coming from.

Would it be an idea to incorporate photographic elements in the splash?
Comment 11 Daniel Rogers 2004-03-13 04:09:34 UTC
I said the same thing about photographic elements on irc.

The photographic splash screens have always been my favorite.
Comment 12 Raphaël Quinet 2004-03-13 08:51:04 UTC
When I created the above image based on jimmac's splash screen, my first
idea was to include photographic elements instead of parts of the GIMP
toolbox. But I couldn't find what kind of photo to put there...
Anyway, I agree that some photogaphic elements would be nice. Either
based on the idea above, or based on a totally different concept like
some of the previous splash screens.
Comment 13 Jakub Steiner 2004-03-13 10:33:08 UTC
http://sven.gimp.org/splash-mockup2.png is still my favourite.

I understand some people have a problem of a simple design. People
prefer saturated vivid colors and buy detergets that use the full
color spectrum on the cover.

None of the 'fancy' splashes here are convincing however. I have an
idea involving a photo, but I doubt I can make it in time.
Comment 14 Andreas Røsdal 2004-03-13 11:21:42 UTC
I've made another suggestion here, with a 3d model of wilber:
http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~andrearo/gimp_wilber_splash.png
Comment 15 Raphaël Quinet 2004-03-13 11:49:45 UTC
Another argument against what I proposed above is that it introduces a
new Wilber, which is different from the one shown in the tip of the day
and featured on the web site (old or new). Although I am not opposed
to a more modern Wilber, we should only put it on the splash screen if
this is somehow coordinated with the other "official" appearances of
Wilber. I don't think that we have the time to do this now.

Note to Andreas Røsdal: Your 3D Wilber is very nice. Unfortunately, it
suffers from the problem described above, so it should probably wait for
the next major release of the GIMP.

So I would go for jimmac's proposal.
Comment 17 Sven Neumann 2004-03-13 17:32:50 UTC
This bug report is really not meant as a contest or something. It's
just a reminder for me that I need to commit Jimmac's splash screen
before 2.0 is packaged.
Comment 18 weskaggs 2004-03-14 18:53:35 UTC
Just a point, which I didn't appreciate earlier: Gimp opens so
quickly on a decent machine that the splash screen is hardly visible,
so (a) it isn't worth stressing over a whole lot, and (b) the less
obtrusive it is the better. The story would be different if you
actually had to pay attention to it.
Comment 19 Sven Neumann 2004-03-14 19:18:33 UTC
That's exactly why I prefer a plain splash over a complex one.
Comment 20 Sven Neumann 2004-03-15 00:19:55 UTC
I used
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/gimp2-splash/gimp-2.0a-extended.png
and cut a few pixels off the bottom. This has been tested this with
different font sizes between 8 and 18.
