Description DmD (Spider) Ljungmark 2004-03-08 12:51:56 UTC
Description of Problem:
"Subpixelantialiasing" is translated as
"Underbildpunktsutjämning"

Förslagsvis "Delpunktsutjämning" eller
"Delpunktskantutjämning" (förvirrande långt)

Att lägga om "Utjämning" till "kantutjämning" är
nog att föredra även i andra dialoger här ("Detaljer")

Fedora Core 1,
Gnome gnome-font-properties 2.4.0

Using english in the bug report would help. Can you translate what
you're saying?
Comment 2 DmD (Spider) Ljungmark 2004-03-16 10:41:04 UTC
Well, the bug report is about the translation, so it doesn't make much
sense to translate it to English.

its about the Swedish translation, btw.
Comment 3 Vincent Untz 2004-03-16 10:43:57 UTC
Moving to l10n/swedish.

Some well established Swedish translation terms to keep in mind:

pixel        == bildpunkt
antialiasing == kantutjämning

So, yes, the translation of "subpixel antialiasing" will be a long term by
necessity.
Our translation policy (http://www.gnome.se/sv/hjalpa/#stil-och-policy) is to be
correct and not deviate from the meaning, intent, and style in the original
English messages. This means that we shouldn't alter the meaning of messages; we
should just translate them into something that means exactly the same.

A good test if a translation is good enough is to translate it back and see if
one gets exactly what the original English message meant. In this case the
original English message is "subpixel antialiasing".
"Delpunktsutjämning" would be the equivalent of "subdot smoothing" or "subpoint
smoothing". Not quite the same as "subpixel antialiasing".
"Delpunktskantutjämning" is slightly better, but would still be the equivalent
of "subdot antialiasing" or "subpoint antialiasing". Still not quite the same.

Perhaps "delbildpunktskantutjämning" is what you want? Or do you have better
suggestions?

Furthermore, where "Utjämning" appears as a message on its own, then its the
translation of the original message "Smoothing". If you rather want that
original message to be "Antialiasing" instead of "Smoothing", then please file a
seperate bug report about that against the English original message. That
problem is definately not a bug in the Swedish translation.

Writing "del" instead of "under" makes the word somewhat easier, with no loss of
precision, I'd say.

Does the context allow a separation into more than one word? Like
"Kantutjämning med delbildpunkter"?
Comment 6 Christian Rose 2005-06-26 17:32:14 UTC
Ok, I've now changed the Swedish translation in gnome-control-center HEAD to use
"delbildpunktskantutjämning" instead. I'll attach a diff.
