I'd prefer that we _reduce_ the number of directories rather than
increase.  It makes compile times just that much longer.

me too, but the right way to do that imo is to either not let automake
go in each subdir, or to split up the plugins.

for consistency and ease of handling, xvid needs to be split up, since
the two plugins use different libraries.

Both libs are in the same package (libxvidcore)...
