Description Rodd Clarkson 2004-02-23 04:10:50 UTC
Nautilus is using a different icon to indicate that spacial folders are
already open. While this is a wonderful idea, the image it uses and the
position of emblems are inconsistent with the currently used them. Both of
these issues need to be addressed for consistency.

I'll attach a screen shot so you can see what I'm seeing on my desktop.

I'm not sure how to fix the 'emblems' issue, but the symlink emblem moves
to a different position.

I have however got a suggestion on what to use as the image that indicates
the folder is open. When you drag a file or folder to a folder, the folder
'opens' to indicate that it's selected. This image could be used to
indicate the folder is open. Because the drag action above also highlights
the folder, this would allow both states to appear distinct.

In case it's not obvious, the music folder is open on the desktop.
Comment 3 Luis Villa 2004-03-04 22:52:12 UTC
Hrm, Rodd, I don't see this behavior at all. What version of nautilus
are you using? [It's a weird bug, agreed.]
Comment 4 Rodd Clarkson 2004-03-04 23:00:53 UTC
Louis, I'm using nautilus-2.5.8 currently, but I've seen it for the
last three or four releases (and just assumed it was so visible that
it would be fixed real soon now).
Comment 5 Rodd Clarkson 2004-03-04 23:48:03 UTC
Louis got me thinking and I realized that this has changed a little
since nautilus-2.5.7 when I reported the bug.

The emblems not longer move so that part might be fixed.

Also, the icon is different, but still 'Not Right(tm)' IMHO. I'll
attach another screenshot so you can see what I'm getting now.

Comment 7 Luis Villa 2004-03-04 23:55:59 UTC
I've got that exact same weird icon now, at least once I changed my
theme (nothing happened with my first theme, but it does now with
every theme I've tried since then.) It's very odd.

Dave, Alex, this is really borderline, but it's really, really ugly.
Are you guys seeing it?
Comment 8 André Dahlqvist 2004-03-05 18:36:13 UTC
I see that ugly icon too (the one in the latest screenshot). Jimmac
apparently made this change on purpose (see bug 135798). I believe it
was a big step backwards; Unlike the previously used icon I don't
think it looks like an open folder at all. And why does it have stripes?

Also, that icon is used to indicate that the folder is open no matter
what theme I use, which looks very strange if the theme uses another
color. That could be some weirdness because of my jhbuild install though.
Comment 9 Alexander Larsson 2004-03-08 22:08:53 UTC
These are all bugs in your themes since they lack a visiting icon that
matches their style/color.

The icon is *not* meant to signify "open". Its supposed to mean the
icon is not any more the primary representation of the folder, thats
why its sort of shaded. In fact, i think the new icon is *great*.
Comment 10 Luis Villa 2004-03-09 04:54:03 UTC
The icon looks like total, spectacular ass in /all/ themes except the
default theme (where it does in fact look quite nice.). Half a dozen
people were discussing this issue in #bugs, and all agreed it was a
weird new bug in nautilus- none even possibly considered that it was
supposed to be a feature. When the general consensus of /everyone/ in
#bugs is that a new feature smells, looks, and acts like a bug, then
maybe something is wrong :)

[Heck, even Dave agreed that maybe the correct thing for nautilus to
do is to not attempt this behavior when the icon theme didn't have the
icon. Yes, this would probably slow creation of new icons, but the
current behavior is going to cause a /lot/ of bug traffic from people
wondering what this misrendered icon is going to look like.]

Anyway, not to be a dick, but I urge you guys to reconsider and fix
the bug as dave proposed, so reopening.
Comment 11 Alexander Larsson 2004-03-16 14:42:11 UTC
What do you think we should do then? Remove the feature, or use an
icon that looks like the accept icon used for "can accept drop"? Both
sounds wrong to me. And the fact that it looks bad with other themes
can be fixed in other themes.
Comment 12 Sebastien Bacher 2005-05-13 09:44:15 UTC
do you guy still consider this as a nautilus bug and not a theme one? I works
fine with current themes, I would say that's a theme bugs for others...
