GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 133881
replaygain always uses album gain if available
Last modified: 2010-02-07 09:56:31 UTC
I'm very happy to see replaygain support in rhytmbox 0.7. However, it would be nice to have a configuration option to select weather album gain or track gain should be used to set the volume. This is configurable in xmms :)
Isn't album gain "better" than track gain?
Nah.. some albums has one track that is much louder than the others, just as an effect. When you random songs from a long list all the other tracks from that album will play on a more silent level than other songs because of that one loud track that lowers the album gain. Album gain is for listening to whole albums and getting the experience that the album creator was aiming for. When mixing tracks from different albums you almost always want track gain instead and get smaller differences in volumes.
Ok, so instead of a configuration option, track gain could be used in random mode and maybe in playlists, while album gain would be used in non random mode. This should work for you, wouldn't it ?
Having it be smart enough to use the track gain or album gain as appropriate would kick ass. Definitely the GNOME way of doing it.
