Description Dennis Smit 2004-02-05 21:23:25 UTC
Applet HELP doesn't get installed and is non existing in
the source tree.

Some help buttons do popup an error dialog some don't,
could use some cleaning as well i guess.
Comment 1 Marc Dequènes 2004-05-23 10:07:05 UTC
I'm the Debian gnome-applets maintainer, and i confirm help files have dispeared
during 2.6 release, whereas they where still present during gswitchit
integration in 2.5 (in 2.5.0 at least).
Comment 2 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2004-05-23 18:11:05 UTC
I think we should ask folks in GDP to help us. I just do not have time for the
documentation. And I am not native English speaker. Dennis, could you please
raise the question in gnome-doc maillist?
Comment 3 Dennis Smit 2004-05-24 13:27:11 UTC
I'm on it.
Comment 4 Dennis Smit 2004-05-24 13:39:03 UTC
I've posted a request:

Comment 5 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2004-05-24 13:46:47 UTC
OK, thanks. I am sure ready to provide any docs I have (from the good old
standalone applet) - and any help. But it should be done by some real tech
writer IMHO:)
Comment 6 Dennis Smit 2004-06-09 12:15:48 UTC
Well, didn't have much of a reaction till now ;(
Comment 7 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2004-06-09 13:27:10 UTC
Exactly. Whet else can we do? Please do not ask me to do it myself:)
Comment 8 Dennis Smit 2004-06-09 14:51:59 UTC
No idea actually, we can start nagging the SUN documentation team! :)

However in some other bug I saw that they actually don't even maintain some
of their own docs any longer so i won't be putting my hope there.

I would almost say 'hey, shall I write them!' but... I'm not a writter
and english ain't my native language, so that won't be happening, period!

So, eh.. we've got a problem here !
Comment 9 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2004-06-09 14:58:34 UTC
We really got the problem. Because noone listed for this bug knows English...
Actually, the only idea I got is to readress this bug to something GDP knows about.
Comment 10 Dennis Smit 2004-06-09 15:37:29 UTC
Hmms, I'll try to bug some GDP people on IRC.

Besides does SUN doc team has an email address, we can always try!?
Comment 11 Breda McColgan 2004-08-06 12:44:09 UTC
Hi Sergey and Dennis,

I'm a member of the Sun JDS doc team, and we do indeed plan to write a manual
for the version of gswitchit that is shipped in JDS. However, the Sun version of
gswitchit is probably earlier than the latest version that is available in CVS.

Although I would be happy to update the Sun draft of the gswitchit manual to
reflect the latest software in CVS, and put this updated manual back into CVS, I
won't be able to do so in time for GNOME 2.8, unfortunately :(

The GDP recently held the first in a planned series of "Documentation Days", to
identify the documentation needs for GNOME 2.8:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-doc-list/2004-July/msg00032.html
Perhaps if you contact Shaun, he could assign a writer to help you?

Alternatively, perhaps Sergey could update his version of the document in CVS
(now 14 months old) to document the latest version of the software, and one of
my colleagues could edit this draft as a temporary measure for GNOME 2.8? I
could revise this draft after GNOME 2.8, if necessary.

Regards,
Breda.
Comment 12 Sergey V. Udaltsov 2004-08-06 14:00:57 UTC
Hi Breda

Well, actually the version in 2.8 is not significantly different from 2.6. The
applet is essentially same from the user POV - the capplet was just slightly
improved. I will try to contact Shaun and we'll see what we could do.

The existing version of the docs is so old that probably it would not make sense
to update it - it could be simpler to rewrite it completely:) Anyway, I'll have
a look when I find time (I'm afraid it is going to happen after my holidays).

Thanks for contacting us.
