I've seen this on and off as well- it's surely a showstopper for an
app that displays text, right? :) FWIW, it still fails for me with
HEAD gpdf.

This pdf file has some Type 3 fonts in it, which gpdf does not
support. This bug is a duplicate of bug 112506.
