GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 128535
Option "Show minimized windows on all desktops" missed
Last modified: 2020-11-07 12:14:05 UTC
Description of Problem: I recently upgraded from RedHat7.3 to Fedora1.0 and can't find option "Show minimized windows on all desktops". Without that option, the option "Restoring minimized windows: restore to current desktop" is much less useful.
What's the difference of having "Show windows from all workspaces"? What 'show minimized windows on all desktops' adds more?
It adds easy way to unclutter desktop and transfer windows from one desktop to another.
But can't you do same w/ show windows from all workspaces?
In this case the toolbar will be messed up with all windows on all desktops. I need only windows on current desktop and all windows not shown on any desktop. Eg. when I has no room on current desktop, I just minimize few windows to free space on the screen. So these windows excess capabilities of this desktop and need to be moved to another desktop, but I am too ocupied to do that. When I switched to another free desktop I will see these windows and only them. With this option enabled sometimes I used more than 4 desktops without any exatrawork. I never used more than one desktop after switching to Gnome2 - it too hard. To move bunch of windows to another desktop to free up space on task panel I must do lot of work: 1. select free desktop 2. return to previous desktop 3. unmimize window 4. move it to the free desktop 5. repeat 2-4 for all windows When option "show all windows on all desktops" is enable I can't free up space on the task panel, so I have no idea why I need more than one desktop - they all are identical. Think a bit differently: the opened document are placed on the desk, the minimized document are not owned by any desktop, they are in the folder I carry with me. When I need document, I can use documents on the desk or documents in the folder, but not on another desk. When I need to work on another desk, I will place all required documents in the my folder and walk to another desk. The idea is clear.
Please re-add this option - I've come back to linux after a while this feature is sorely missed - in my mind it is better usability - when a window is minimized it can be thought of as not being on a particular desktop. My mental model of an application being 'on' the desktop is reinforced by seeing the application being there, when it is minimised there is nothing to see except in the window list, which is either - really cluttered with all the applications on it (so I don't notice it) - worse; the application is minimised on another desktop, I have to hunt through all my other desktops to find it, looking at the task bar all the time. Also, as the vlisivka mentioned it provides another way to move apps from one desktop to another.
I've proposed a new gui for the window list preferences that addresses both models of desktop interaction and is simpler than what we currently have: Current gui: Window list content (o) Show windows from current workspace ( ) Show windows from all workspaces Window grouping (o) Never group windows ( ) Group windows when space is limited ( ) Always group windows Window list content (o) Restore to current workspace ( ) Restore to native workspace Proposed gui: Window grouping (o) Never group windows ( ) Group windows when space is limited ( ) Always group windows Minimized windows ( ) Stay on native desktop (o) Stay on current desktop This addresses: - No greying out of options - The mental model for the second user case is less fuzzy (it's not about what is displayed in the window list, but *where* the minimized windows are)
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old feature requests in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years. If you still use gnome-panel and if you are still requesting this feature in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-panel/-/issues/ Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be implemented.
